Mountainsmith Taps Colorado Veterinarian to Up the Dogonomics of 2015 K9-Pack Line

Golden, CO – Mountainsmith’s dedication to the K-9 adventure experience has spanned 35+ years and there's no slowing the efforts. With the guidance of local service dog veterinarian, Dr. Robin M. Starr DVM, MEd, Mountainsmith has redesigned its 2015 canine saddle bags to be the most “dogonomically” correct gear haulers on the market.

"I was thrilled when Mountainsmith asked me to assist with the 2015 K-9 Pack redesign program,” says Starr. "Mountainsmith already makes fantastic K-9 products, but like humans, dogs come in all shapes and sizes and have different athletic abilities. After working with service dogs, which wear their backpack or harness most all day, every day, I saw room for improvement in the current dog packs on the market. Mountainsmith was very interested in how to upgrade their 'dogonomics' to incorporate the efficiency and ergonomic positioning of high-end sled dog harnesses.”

Mountainsmith Design Lead & Product Line Manager, Luke Boldman went straight to work and began studying sled dog harness designs to recreate much better freedom of shoulder movement with an innovative chest pad and repositioned straps. The design changes dramatically cut down on any discomfort that can occur as well as muscle, joint and nerve damage when the harness straps move as dogs maneuver on all fours.

“I am really pleased with the end result,” remarks Starr. “These new packs will finally do justice for our four-legged, pack-carrying companions.”

*Robin M. Starr, DVM, MEd, was a small animal practitioner for 20 years in Colorado and is recently retired from heading a non-profit service dog organization that rescues dogs from shelters and trains them to assist people with mobility impairments.
