Recover’s Recycled Clothing Raises $16,130 for Earth Day Network

Charlotte, NC - The earth’s health is a hot topic in today’s political climate, with climate change at the forefront of everyone’s attention. Recover Brands - a North Carolina clothing brand leading the way in active eco-apparel - have decided it’s time to stop talking and start doing. In a fundraising mission to benefit the Earth Day Network, Recover sold 1,613 ‘Earth Now’ shirts, raising $16,130 in less than one month. The cherry on top? Each shirt is made out of 8 plastic bottles.

“The average American generates about 4.6 lbs of ‘trash’ a day and less than ¼ of that trash is recycled. To say the least, that adds up,” Bill Johnston, co-founder of Recover said of their reason behind their shirts and the fundraiser. “We wanted to do something active to give back, and are blown away by the results.”

Initially aiming to sell 500 shirts to support the Earth Day Network’s mission to ensure a more sustainable tomorrow, the brand’s ‘Earth Now’ logo’d tee quickly gained popularity, prompting them to up the goal to 1,500 shirts. According to Johnston, the shirts were being sold until the last day of the campaign before they had to go to print. The shirts are now being shipped in time for new owners to wear them on Earth Day, April 22nd.

An environmentally conscious company, Recover’s method of creating comfortable active apparel out of discarded plastic bottles and recycled cotton has resulted in a 35% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, 66% reduction in energy consumption, and 55% reduction in water consumption over their competition. They also don’t use die in the creation of their shirts, opting instead to presort the plastic and cotton by color. Although they sell a line of their own shirts, hoodies and packs, they regularly do ‘collection’ prints to raise money or awareness for certain organizations.

“This is an exciting time to be making eco-apparel because of the growing awareness of consumers,” notes Johnston. “We’re ecstatic about being able to donate such a huge sum for Earth Day, and are pumped to see our audience getting larger and more diverse. We’re seeing actual progress in the work we’re doing.”

Recover is also a member of 1% For The Planet, priding themselves as an organization that connects ‘dollars with doers’ to support action that protects and conserves our home sweet earth. In addition to their work with Earth Day Network, Recover has put on fundraisers for the National Park Foundation and the National Parks Conservation Association with their Protect Our Parks tee.
