Marmot®, Jarden® & Challenged Athletes Test Endurance in 2016 Empire State Building Run-Up

Rohnert Park (CA) – December 30, 2015 – Outdoor clothing, apparel, and equipment manufacturer Marmot Mountain, LLC, is pleased to announce that Marmot Ambassador Athlete Sean Swarner, a two-time cancer survivor and climber of the “Seven Summits,” and KC Kennedy, an employee of Marmot, an avid runner and a mother of four, have been selected to represent the brand for the 2016 Empire State Building Run-Up (ESBRU), which takes place on February 3, 2016. For the second consecutive season, Marmot is the presenting sponsor of this landmark New York event, and beginning this year, has selected brand athletes to represent the company. Joe Polwrek, an ultra-runner and employee from Jarden Corporation, Marmot’s parent company (NYSE: JAH), and Colonel Patty Collins, a disabled veteran from the Challenged Athletes Foundation, a world leader in helping people with physical disabilities, will also represent Marmot in the Run-Up. All of the participants, who have been training in Marmot’s Momentum category of clothing and apparel designed for adventures both indoors and outside, will also participate in a special open-to-the-media training session at the Empire State Building’s tenant-only Fitness Center on Monday, February 1.

The athletes join runners from around the world—including elite competition marathoners and tri-athletes—to scale the Empire State Building’s 1,576 steps and 86 floors. The event is owned by Empire State Realty Trust, Inc. (NYSE: ESRT), a leading real estate investment trust (REIT) serving the greater New York metropolitan area, which includes the Empire State Building. For the second year, the Challenged Athletes Foundation will be the official charity partner of the ESBRU with a designated heat in the race. As the presenting sponsor, Marmot will be the official timekeeper of the race, and will also provide the male and female first place winners of the elite heats with Marmot watches and exclusive Marmot winners’ jackets.

In 2009, Marmot Ambassador Athlete, Sean Swarner, was voted one of the top eight most inspirational people of all time. In a recent celebrity round-up; Zero to Hero: Five Inspiring Men, Sean was featured among global icons, Sir Richard Branson and Walt Disney. A remarkable two-time young adult cancer survivor—13 and 16 years old—Sean was given a prognosis of just fourteen days to live and endured a medically-induced coma for almost a full year. In 2002, at the age of 27, and climbing with only one functioning lung (a result of radiation therapy), Sean became the first cancer survivor to stand on top of the highest mountain in the world: “Reaching the summit of Mt. Everest, I could hear the screams and cheers of everyone in the world touched by cancer. All the people I was climbing for and all the people who helped me reach the top.”

Marmot employee KC Kennedy has been a dedicated endurance and ultra-runner throughout her life. Her crowning achievement has been to raise her four children—ages 18, 20, 22 and 27—who have been her life’s greatest passion and challenge. In 2011, during a difficult and transitional time in her life, she began her career with Marmot as a graphic designer which gave her strength and resolve to master single motherhood. “I came to know there is nothing greater than hope and unconditional love. It will drive you to always do your very best,” she explains. “I like to say my children are my biggest fans but the reality is they are the true super heroes in my life – without them I would never be the woman I am today.”

Joe Polwrek is aSenior Procurement Specialist at Jarden’s corporate office in Norwalk, CT. His athletic career began when he started heavyweight rowing at Dartmouth College. Joe’s experience with crew gave him the confidence to tackle other athletic feats. Despite his towering 6’6 height—oversized by endurance running standards—he eventually completed a 50-mile ultra-marathon. In 2014, Martin E. Franklin, Jarden’s founder and chairman, also an avid endurance athlete, invited Joe to join him to run a 90 mile ultra-marathon with him in Israel. Martin and Joe crossed the finish line together, among 17 finishers out of 39 runners. “If running isn’t your thing, there are plenty of other ways to challenge yourself. No matter what you do, the biggest thing is enjoying the process and only stopping to smell the roses.”

Lt. Colonel Patty Collins had just returned home from Iraq when she was hit by an automobile while cycling to work. The Lieutenant Colonel sustained injuries to her left leg that were beyond severe. Ten months later, Patty decided to amputate the remnants of her leg below the knee—not only so she could move, but move on as well. Patty is now a member of the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) Elite Paratriathlon Team. She’s won the Para-Triathlon Nationals and Worlds, and also the current world record holder of the 70.3 distance triathlon for female amputees. “Your mind is exponentially stronger than your body and if there is something you want to do, your mind will enable your body to find a way.”
