FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Sunshine Coast, QLD – Rudy Project pro triathlete Tim Reed put on quite the show last Saturday, holding off 2-time champion Sebastian Kienle in an incredible sprint finish to win the 2016 IRONMAN® 70.3 World Championship. This was the first time since 2011 that an Australian has taken the World Champion title, making the win an even sweeter victory for Reed on his home turf.

The day started out with a 1.2 mile swim that was led by Rudy Project pro Josh Amberger. Amberger managed to lead the field until halfway through the 56 mile bike leg, where he was passed by Kienle and Rudy Project sponsored athlete Andi Dreitz. Kienle set off on the half marathon run with fierce determination, but it was not long before Reed powered his way up to battle after a consistent and solid ride. The two took turns swapping the lead, eventually making their way to the finishing chute where Reed overcame Kienle by only 2 crowd-thundering seconds. In addition to Reed’s win, notable performances by Ruedi Wild, Sam Appleton, and Nick Kastelein earned these Rudy Project pros finishes in the Top 10.

“The Tralyx sunnies are easily the best all-around sunglasses I've trained and raced in,” Reed shared with Rudy Project after his win. “When it comes to the biggest races, like the IRONMAN® 70.3 World Championships, the best equipment is essential for victory.”

The women’s race delivered an equally exciting contest, with home town favorite and Rudy Project triathlete Mel Hauschildt grabbing second place behind 26-year-old Holly Lawrence. Hauschildt’s impressive 1:18 run solidified her place as the runner up World Champion. In addition, breakout 70.3 competitor and Rudy Project pro Ellie Salthouse earned herself a solid 11th place.

“My Rudy Project Tralyx sunnies are my favorite racing shades by far,” Hauschildt stated. “They are so light, comfy and easy to see everything around you on both the bike and run. They also look amazing. I chose the white Tralyx SX with ImpactX-2 lenses on race day which helped tremendously with changing light conditions!”

“I couldn’t be happier for Mel and Tim,” said Chris Lupo, Director of Sports Marketing for Rudy Project North America. “They are two of the nicest people in the sport and they both race so consistently at the very highest level. I can’t wait to watch them race in Kona next month!”

The Tralyx sunglasses along with the Wing57 aero / TT helmet were a hit amongst Rudy Project triathletes at the 70.3 World Championships, as they are built for the highest level of performance and speed. The Tralyx has earned accolades from a recent feature in Peloton and a 10 out of 10 ranking from Cycling Active, while the Wing57 has helped to earn Rudy Project the title of #1 Most Worn Helmet at the IRONMAN® World Championship for the past five years. It is no wonder why the top half distance triathletes chose these Rudy Project shades and helmet for their biggest day of competition.
