Sail Newport, New England’s largest public sailing center, today announced a multi-year sponsorship with Helly Hansen as its official apparel and footwear partner. The partnership brings together Sail Newport’s community sailing leadership with the technical innovation of Helly Hansen for all sailing conditions.

Sail Newport selected the Norwegian brand for its 137 years of expertise in manufacturing technical and lifestyle apparel for professionals and recreational sailors. Helly Hansen will be the official apparel partner for selected Sail Newport-organized 2014 Regattas, including the Youth Challenge, the BEG Advanced Race Clinic, the Newport Regatta, the USODA New England Championships, the J24 World Championship, the Sail Newport Blind National Championship, and the Halloween Howl Youth Regatta.

“Helly Hansen’s relationship with Sail Newport is a natural fit,” said Filip Francke, vice president and general manager of Helly Hansen’s North American Sport & Work Wear division. “Sailing has been a part of our cultural fiber since Norwegian sea captain Helly Juell Hansen created the first supple waterproof fabrics for his crew in 1877. With the Sail Newport partnership, Helly Hansen is taking the next step in its long-term commitment to support and serve the US sailing and boating/watersport community’s growth.”

For the next two years, Helly Hansen will outfit Sail Newport instructors, coaches, staff, race teams and race committees with clothing from its sailing line. In addition, Helly Hansen will provide apparel awards for a variety of regattas and events. Helly Hansen tech T-shirts, foul weather jackets and pants, spray tops, fleece items, caps, beanies, and footwear will be featured at the Sailing Center and at selected adult and youth regattas. In keeping with Sail Newport’s community focus, Helly Hansen will partner with Sail Newport to support and create educational material, from how to dress on the water to instructional materials to enhance the development of the next generation of sailors.

“Helly Hansen is the hands-down leader in developing innovative products for sailors in all disciplines from off-shore racing to inshore sailing, coastal cruising, and dinghy racing,” said Brad Read, executive director ofSail Newport. “Their apparel and footwear bridges all facets of the sailing lifestyle both on and off the water.
