Backcountry.com was founded by Jim Holland and the late John Bresee in 1996. They started from humble beginnings in a Park City garage and their first sale was a Pieps 457 Opti-finder avalanche beacon. Over the last two decades, Backcountry.com has grown into one of the largest outdoor gear e-commerce channels. In 2007, it was sold to John Malone’s Liberty Media Corp and again to TSG Consumer Partners in 2015. Melanie Cox is the current CEO.
In 2018, Backcountry.com launched a private label and collaborated with brands like Flylow, DPS, and Black Diamond. It expanded the line in 2019 with climbing, mountain biking, and snowboarding collections with even more brand partners.
