Wellington, New Zealand (January 2014) – Merino pioneer Icebreaker has re-engineered its mid layers to create sweaters, hoodies and jackets that are warmer, stronger and lighter.

While most innovation in merino outdoor clothing has involved blending fibers to make merino fabrics cheaper, Icebreaker is using the latest technology to build the next generation of high performance merino.

For Fall/Winter 2014, the New Zealand-based merino specialist is creating mid layers made from merino wool wrapped around a nylon core. The Realfleece fabric is then brushed to create millions of extra air pockets, almost doubling the warmth while keeping garments thin, lightweight and low-bulk.

The next generation garments are:

  • The new Atom series of technical mid layers, with a touch of LYCRA® for stretch and recovery. Styles for men and women are the Atom LS Zip, Atom LS Half Zip, Atom LS Hood, Atom Vest and Atom Legless. Atom layers have a sporty, alpine-inspired design, with colorblocking and accent trims.
  • From the Realfleece collection – nature’s alternative to a synthetic fleece – come the Cascade LS Zip, Cascade LS Hood, Cascade Pullover Hoody and Cascade Vest for women, and the Sierra LS Zip, Sierra LS Hood, Sierra LS Pullover Hoody and Sierra Vest for men. In high-energy colors, fun stripes and graphic patterns for men, these are exceptionally warm brushed layers for outdoors and the city.
  • The new Escape LS Crewe and Escape Hood men’s lifestyle sweaters, with a striking colorblock print.

The high performance next generation garments feel incredible against the skin, says Rob Achten, Icebreaker Creative Director and Vice President of Product.

“They’re warm in even the coldest conditions, and the brushed surface gives them a cozy, luxurious feel, but they’re also strong and durable,” says Achten.

“Launching brushed garments made from a merino-wrapped nylon core is just the first in a series of technological innovations to create mid layers that are warmer, stronger and lighter. We’ll be taking this level of innovation even further in future seasons.”
