Riders Alliance, now 62 members strong, is the world’s largest group of pro athletes fighting climate change

January 12, 2015 — Protect Our Winters is proud to welcome eight new professional winter sports athletes to its Riders Alliance.

Witnessing the impact of climate change on snowpack first-hand has been a call to action for these athletes and why they looked to join the program.

“To see how climate change is affecting our racing and training conditions at home and abroad has been a huge red flag,” says Nordic ski racer and Sochi Olympian Simi Hamilton, who recently signed on to the Riders Alliance. “More often than not we are racing on courses entirely made of man-made or trucked-in snow, and winter temperatures rarely dip below freezing. It’s becoming more and more obvious how things are changing for the worse, and bringing these issues into the spotlight is an extremely important step in protecting our climate and winter from future deterioration. Cutting carbon emissions is a fundamental action that we can all take to begin to right the ship.”

The new members include:

Sochi 2014 Olympians

  • Kelly Clark
  • Maddie Bowman
  • Sarka Pancochova
  • Roz Groenwoud
  • Simi Hamilton
  • Professional snowboarder Seth Wescott
  • Professional skier Julian Carr
  • Mountaineer Adrian Ballinger

“The Riders Alliance was founded in 2007 as a way to bring together pro athletes concerned about climate change and has become one of the most powerful ways Protect Our Winters engages the winter sports community,” says POW’s Executive Director, Chris Steinkamp. “We look forward to working with our new members to inspire people to take personal and political action to reduce carbon emissions so we can all keep enjoying winter sports activities.

The group is now 62 athletes strong, featuring some of the biggest names in the winter sports world—Jeremy Jones, Gretchen Bleiler, Chris Davenport, Kit Delauriers, Jamie Anderson, and Danny Davis.

In the coming year, the Riders Alliance will work to reduce and offset their own carbon emissions, while educating the winter sports community about climate change issues through social media campaigns and activations with the EPA and top brands including Burton Snowboards, The North Face, and Patagonia.
