Mammut recalls crevasse rescue devices due to risk of injury
In conjunction with the Consumer Product Safety Commission, Mammut has issued a recall for its RescYou crevasse rescue devices.
No injuries have been reported, but officials said the pull cord lock cam could fail in a batch of about 70 units, which were sold in U.S. and Canadian specialty outdoor stores and online at www.mammut.com from June 2013 through January 2014. They contain the batch numbers 12-12 and 03-13, printed in white on the side of the blue ascender.
Retailers and consumers should immediately stop using the product and contact Mammut at 1-800-451-5127 or [email protected] for a free replacement. It is illegal to sell or resell any recalled product.
The crevasse rescue devices (MSRP $125) are pulley systems used for ski mountaineering and mountain climbing to lift a skier or climber who has fallen into a crevasse. The rescue device consists of blue- and silver-finished mechanical ascenders, each using a cam that grabs a lifting rope, allowing the rope to slide only in one direction. The ascenders are connected by an orange rope threaded through pulleys.
