eVent® fabrics and footwear company Topo Athletic are pleased to announce the introduction of the Hydroventure, the lightest waterproof breathable trail running shoe available on the market and the first footwear product to use eVent’s newest waterproof and air permeable technology—eVent DVdryLT. The Hydroventure (MSRP $130) is available online at REI.com, at participating retailers and at topoathletic.com.
To create eVent DVdryLT, the team at eVent fabrics engineered a new, waterproof and air permeable Direct Venting™ (DV) membrane that dissipates heat and moisture through footwear and advances breathability during athletic use. Additionally, a patented one-piece upper construction was developed. This innovation allows the fabric laminate to become the body, or upper, of the shoe, which reduces the complexity of construction found in most light waterproof shoes. The eVent DVdryLT manufacturing process eliminates layers and glue to save weight and cost, which increases breathability and improves flexibility.
eVent estimates its new construction yields a significant weight reduction—more than one ounce per pair—because it requires 50 percent fewer parts and 30 percent fewer steps when compared to typical waterproof shoe construction.
Breathability is vastly improved, too, according to eVent’s internal comparisons of its own waterproof and air permeable footwear technologies. A three-layer one-piece upper laminate—such as the one Topo uses in the Hydroventure—more than doubles breathability over traditional waterproof shoe construction.
“The invention of eVent DVdryLT is a tremendous step forward for performance footwear,” said Chad Kelly, Director of Sales and Product Line for eVent fabrics. “The one-piece construction is, simply put, like putting the best-quality jacket over the top of your foot. Footwear brands can now design a go-to waterproof shoe that is comfortable year ‘round in wet conditions. eVent DVdryLT eliminates the problems that have long been associated with waterproof shoes: the stuffy feeling, the inflexibility and the weight.”
With the introduction of the Hydroventure, Topo Athletic becomes the first footwear company to adopt eVent’s DVdryLT technology and construction process. The company created a pliable three-layer laminate for the upper of the shoe. This laminate is composed of an outer mesh textile and inner lining, which are bonded to and sandwich the eVent membrane. The laminate is then formed into the upper of the shoe, and is finally attached to the midsole and outsole using a durable and watertight seal.
“Making a comfortable lightweight construction is central to Topo Athletic’s product philosophy,” said Tony Post, founder and CEO of Topo Athletic. “Over my 30-year career, I’ve helped create many waterproof shoes, and the historical challenge has often been the multiple layers of material, cements, tapes and gaskets—all of which make the upper stiffer and add weight. Thanks in large part to eVent fabrics’ new technology, the Hydroventure is more comfortable and lighter in weight than any other waterproof breathable running shoe on the market today.”
The Topo Hydroventure weighs just 9.7 oz (men’s size 9) and 8.1 oz (women’s size 7), offers a 3mm drop (23mm heel – 20mm ball) and features a flexible ESS (EVA Super Skin) rock plate for additional ground protection.
With the introduction of eVent DVdryLT, eVent is also announcing new product names that differentiate its two primary footwear products—eVent DVdryLT and eVent DVdry. Both are among eVent’s patented ‘Direct Venting™’ family of waterproof and air permeable membrane technologies. These air permeable membranes have billions of tiny open pores that allow heat and moisture vapor (sweat) inside the footwear to escape in vapor form. Yet, the pores in the membrane are too small to let water pass through from the outside, so the membrane is waterproof, keeping feet dry from rain and wet conditions.
As featured in the Topo Hydroventure, eVent DVdryLT is intended for light footwear, such as running, cycling, soccer, golf and every day use. eVent DVdry is the proven waterproof technology for outdoor, hunting and other footwear requiring extra durability and is constructed using a traditional bootie insert.
Over 25 global footwear brands use eVent waterproof fabric, including Hoka One One, UGG, Lacoste, Ahnu and many others that serve the outdoor, golf, children’s, everyday wear, snowmobiling, hunting, and tactical markets. Additionally, military, police, firefighting and other professionals employ eVent technologies in footwear.
About eVent® fabrics and eVent membrane technology
Since 1999, eVent fabrics have set the standard for truly air permeable and waterproof membranes in textiles. The technology used to create eVent membranes was invented in the 1990s to improve the pollutant-capturing performance of air filtration systems and give superior protection to industrial machinery. eVent fabrics—found in outdoor, winter sports, cycling and professional apparel and footwear—were the first air permeable and waterproof performance fabrics on the market that let the sweat out™ through Direct Venting™ technology. CLARCOR Industrial Air manufactures eVent membranes and fabrics, collaborating with worldwide suppliers to offer a broad selection of waterproof, windproof and protective textiles to companies that create apparel, footwear, shelter and accessories.
