This year, the conference portion of the event on Dec. 7 to 8 will include presentations from speakers Gene Marks, columnist for The New York Times, Business Week and Forbes; Bob Negen from Whiz Bang Training; author and retail consultant Jim Dion; and a panel discussion featuring three of the top running specialty store owners in the country: Ed Griffin of Fleet Feet Syracuse, Kris Hartner of Naperville Running, and Guy Perry of Salt Lake Running Co.

The Running Event focuses on retailer education, sales training and business growth, so sessions like Negen's focusing on customer service and sales strategy, and Dion's, on the foundations of a successful business, provide a valuable opportunity for retailer attendees.

Marks' session will discuss the impact of economic forces on retailer success, while real world retail experience can be mined for tips and strategies during the interactive panel discussion with Griffin, Hartner and Perry.

Here's a look at the backgrounds of the main speakers this year:

Gene Marks, whose talk is presented by New Balance, is an opinionated small business management columnist, author, speaker, and business owner. His books include the Number One Amazon small business best-seller, The Streetwise Small Business Book of Lists, and his latest, In God We Trust: Everyone Else Pays Cash. Simple Lessons From Smart Business Owners.”

Less than a year before the 2012 Presidential Election, Marks will offer big picture insight for small business owners. Where is the economy heading? What are these opportunities? Bob Negen of Whiz Bang Training is one of the most innovative retail marketers in the world today. He is also an expert on retail staff development, on-the-floor selling, store operations, and developing a customer-focused, service-driven store culture. His talk will deliver proven, practical, down-to-earth ideas that really work.

Jim Dion, whose talk is presented by ASICS, is founder and president of Chicago-based Dionco Inc. He is an internationally known retail speaker and trainer, retail consultant, and the author of the best-sellers, Retail Selling Ain't Brain Surgery, It's Twice As Hard; Start and Run a Retail Business; and The Complete Idiot's Guide to Starting and Running a Retail Store.

As a retail consultant, Dion has helped hundreds of retailers large and small successfully reposition their retail business, including Ritz-Carlton and Harley-Davidson. Dion will speak about consumer trends, retail technology, selling and service, retail merchandising and operations, marketing and leadership.

Other speakers include Dr. Paul Langer, who practices with Twin Cities Orthopedics in Minneapolis, and serves as an adjunct clinical faculty member at the University of Minnesota Medical School; Kate Buck, of KBJ Online, a social media management and consulting agency in Austin; Andy Kulina of Sign Me Up, which focuses on sponsorship benefits, event participant engagement, customer loyalty and specialty retailers; and board certified Chiropractic Orthopedist Dr. Shawn Allen, who has an established chiropractic, conservative orthopedics and sports medicine based practice, and is a regular lecturer/speaker for Fitness Education Seminars, and the National Strength and Conditioning Association.

The Running Event Expo, Dec. 8 to 10 in the Austin Convention Center, is the biggest in its six-year history, with its largest show directory ever, thanks to a roster of over 200 exhibitors. The December timing allows running industry vendors to display Fall/Winter 2012 product, providing retailers with a first look at new offerings from top footwear and apparel suppliers, as well as innovative accessories from leading manufacturers.
