Smith Optics Variant Brim Helmet Wins Design Distinction From I.D. Magazine

We have seen the success of the Smith Variant Brim helmet at retail and on the mountain but now the much-deserved praise which the Variant Brim is due has arrived: I.D. Magazine recently awarded the Variant Brim with a Design Distinction as one of the best consumer products to hit the market in 2007-08!

(Ketchum, ID) -- We have seen the success of the Smith Variant Brim helmet at retail and on the mountain but now the much-deserved praise which the Variant Brim is due has arrived: I.D. Magazine recently awarded the Variant Brim with a Design Distinction as one of the best consumer products to hit the market in 2007-08!

Based on a rough set of criteria including functionality, clear ideation, ergonomics, shelf appeal, and innovation the I.D. Magazine jurors were awash with hundreds of shiny gadgets from all over the world. But it would be the Smith Optics Variant Brim that would rise to the top and take home a Design Distinction from the recognized authority on design. Coming in right behind the Best of Category winner, the Apple iPhone, the Smith Variant Brim was tucked in between the iPhone and the SRAM Red road bike group with the Apple wireless keyboard and HP Tablet PC right behind.

Sharing the stage with some of the biggest names in consumer products (Apple, HP, Belkin, Nokia, Revlon…) this award is an amazing accomplishment for our small company and one for which much credit should be given to the Smith design team of Eric Carlson, Drew Chilson and George Giroux. The article credits Matt Rask and Jackalope Studios who provided ideation, but it should be recognized that it was the Smith design team that brought the concepts and technologies to life, making the Variant Brim a reality.
