KEEN Inc. — a leader in hybrid outdoor performance products, including footwear, socks and bags — has pledged to donate its employees’ time in honor of Earth Day, April 22.

During the week of Earth Day, April 18 to 26, the outdoor company is donating 10-minute increments of employee time for every pair of Coronado shoes purchased on KEENFOOTWEAR.COM, and for any Harvest product purchased at a KEEN booth during Earth Day events around the country.

KEEN volunteer time will be dedicated to Waterkeeper Alliance, an international grassroots advocacy organization with more than 180 programs working to preserve and protect communities, ecosystems and water quality around the globe.

“At KEEN, we like to roll up our sleeves and engage with causes that make a positive impact on the environment,” says James Curleigh, CEO of KEEN. “In honor of Earth Day, we’re taking our commitment a step further through an employee volunteer program with Waterkeeper Alliance. We hope our actions inspire others to volunteer their time and/or talents to support efforts they are passionate about.”

Tree Planting in Pittsburgh

On Saturday, April 18, KEEN teamed up with Dick's Sporting Goods to host its third annual Earth Day event to support the work of Friends of the Riverfront and Tree Vitalize. More than 400 volunteers got their hands dirty working on Pittsburgh’s Heritage Trail on the Southside. The trail is part of The Great Allegheny Passage, a 150-mile stretch of trails that connect the city to Washington, D.C.

The team planted 125 trees that were donated from the State of Pennsylvania through Tree Vitalize. The newly planted trees are the start of a forested area along a beautiful stretch of the Monongahela River, right in the heart of the city of Pittsburgh.

In addition to the tree planting, the volunteers also:

o cleaned up and built the trail

o cleared brush

o installed park benches and bike racks

o spread mulch

o planted smaller plants and flowers

o pruned existing trees

o installed garbage and recycling bins

The project was also supported by Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl and the City of Pittsburgh in the form of a donation of plants and trail supplies. Each volunteer that donated $35 to the project received a pair of KEEN shoes, a water bottle and an Earth Day T-shirt.
