Industry Nine Selects Reynolds Cycling’s Made-in-the-U.S.A. Carbon Fiber for All-New 2015 PillarCarbon Series Mountain Bike Wheels

(Sandy, UT) – Industry Nine, an innovative wheel, hub and component company based in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, has selected carbon-fiber wheel specialist Reynolds Cycling to manufacturer the rims for its PillarCarbon series of mountain bike wheels. Reynolds will manufacture the rims at its Carbon Composites Studio at the base of the Wasatch in Sandy, Utah, making the wheelsets nearly completely made in the U.S.; only the bearings have been outsourced. Reynolds currently manufactures its high-end RZR line here as well, and plans to expand U.S. production in the near future.

“Reynolds experience in carbon technology allowed us to manufacture these rims to the exact specifications Industry Nine wanted,” said Paul Lew, Reynolds Cycling director of technology and innovation. “Producing these right here at our Utah headquarters allowed us to work in real time with Industry Nine’s feedback, giving special consideration to a fiber orientation and layup schedule resulting in superior stiffness coupled with the compliance and damping properties associated with the superior ride quality Reynolds carbon is known for.”

Industry Nine PillarCarbon rims feature Reynolds’ proven MR5 technology, which assigns specific base fiber, epoxy resins and fiber orientations to each of the five specific rim regions—bead wall, tire channel, rim sidewall, spoke bed and spoke face—in order to achieve an ideal balance of stiffness, weight, impact resistance and spoke pull-through strength.

Industry Nine’s PillarCarbon series will feature four all new wheel models—the Ultralite Carbon 24H 29, Trail Carbon 29, Trail Carbon 24H 27.5 and Enduro Carbon 27.5—for which Reynolds produced rims with hookless rim channel design, optimized inner rim widths and directional rim stiffness around Industry Nine Torch series hubs and spokes.

“We evaluated everything we have learned about rim performance, made improvements wherever possible and then put the wheels to test in the Pisgah National Forest, the ultimate proving ground for mountain bike equipment,” said Jacob McGahey, Industry Nine director of operations. “And with over 25 years of composites experience, Reynolds possesses the resources, experience, technology and manufacturing ability to build rims that complement Industry Nine’s quality hubs and spokes.”
