Yep. It was crowded in Salt Lake City last week. Outdoor Retailer Summer Market 2012 hit record attendance, nearing 27,000 visitors, according to preliminary figures.
The trade show, held Aug. 2-5, 2012, attracted close to 20 percent more retailers than a year ago, officials said late Tuesday. That’s despite a tighter registration qualification and security improvements, officials said. (Although SNEWS still saw plenty of non-badged, locals on the show floor Sunday).
Nielsen Expositions, which runs the show, said the Open Air Demo, Aug. 1, was also the largest ever, featuring more than 150 exhibitors.
"Summer Market 2012 was a landmark event for the industry, drawing out the top decision makers and design minds who steer innovation and expansion of the active outdoor lifestyle," Outdoor Retailer Show Director Kenji Haroutunian said in a news release. "From the mountaineering and paddlesports core to the running, fly fishing and travel segments as well as international buying attendance, the evidence of a confident and expanding outdoor industry was felt all over the show grounds."
Summer Market returns to Salt Lake City in 2013, but a shift in show dates —Tuesday through Saturday, versus Wednesday through Sunday — is still being discussed. A decision is expected in September of this year. Winter Market 2013 has already shifted to a Tuesday through Saturday schedule and will take place with the All Mountain Demo on Jan. 22 and trade show Jan. 23-26.
Show officials are still in talks whether Salt Lake City can continue to host the show's growth beyond 2013.
