Vasque Athletes Finish Strong over the Holiday Weekend

The Fourth of July weekend brought victories to newcomer Vasque athletes, Brian Rusiecki and Keri Nelson. Rusiecki took first overall at the Finger Lakes Fifties 50 mile race in western New York. Nelson returned to the racing circuit after a two month break and placed first in the women's division at the Gothic to Crested Butte 1/3 Marathon in Colorado. Bryan Dayton placed 5th overall at the Vasque sponsored Leadville Trail 100 Heavy Half Marathon, also in Colorado.
The Finger Lakes Fifties 50 mile course consists of three loops on a twisty trail requiring quick footwork. Rusiecki found himself alone for most of the race and running strong despite the brutal temperatures. After his third lap Rusiecki almost missed the turn for the finish line, but thankfully his girlfriend, Amy Lane, was pacing him and knew which way he needed to go to seal his first place victory, with a time of 6:46:30.
“Overall I was happy with the results,” said Rusiecki. “I felt good for the race and now it's time to focus on prepping for the VT 100 in less than two weeks.”
Rusiecki wore Vasque Mindbender for the race. “They were the perfect combination of cushioning and lightweight when picking my way through some of the rooty footings on the trail,” said Rusiecki. “They also worked great two days post race on a run / hike in the Adirondacks on our way home.”
Nelson's domination of the women's field at the Gothic to Crested Butte 1/3 Marathon proved that a six week break from the racing scene really was just what she needed. The alpine course begins in the town of Gothic, elevation 9485, and winds its way down through picturesque aspen forest and meadows bursting with wildflowers on dirt roads to Crested Butte, elevation 8885. Nelson placed first in the women's division with a time of 57:01:20.
“After today's race I am a huge believer in letting the body heal,” says Nelson. “After a month and a half of limiting myself to the bike and no running, my stress fractured foot feels 100% and I finished first for the women and set a personal record on this course!”
Dayton traveled to Leadville, CO, to race in the Leadville Trail 100 Heavy Half Marathon. The LT100 crew claims the Heavy Half has “all of the challenges, vistas and views of the marathon in half the distance...and a little more”. The race course is out and back through the historic mining district on the east side of Leadville. Dayton finished fifth overall with a time of 2:17:32.
