Athletes from Vasque Trail Team spent the holiday weekend burning up the trail running circuit. Brian Rusiecki won the Pineland Farms 50-miler, in New Gloucester, ME, for the second year in a row and Duncan Callahan took second place at the Sage Burner 50K in Gunnison, CO. Both athletes chose Vasque Transistors for their lightweight responsiveness to changing trail conditions.

Rusiecki returned to Pineland Farms for their Memorial Day Trail Running Festival to attempt to beat his winning time in 2009 and to enjoy the weekend's festivities. Rusiecki finished in 6:06, just shy of his 6:02 record time from the previous year.

“I felt solid the entire day, with no cramping or issues,” says Rusiecki. “Temperatures were warming up by the end of the race and the course was slightly different than last year. So I'm really happy with the win and okay with not breaking my record.”

The Pineland Farms course consists of laps around cross country ski trails and through fields with plenty of rolling hills to keep runners focused.

Callahan gave a solid performance and good chase to the leader at the Sage Burner 50k, finishing in 4:32 to Tim Parr's 4:23.

“Despite the warms temperatures, I was able to steadily close the gap on Parr over the second half of the race,” says Callahan. “This provided a good training benchmark for me—I have the Big Horn 100-miler in two weeks, and I intend to show up ready to race hard and win.”

Next on Rusiecki's schedule is the Pittsfield Peaks 50M this coming weekend. “It should be interesting running two 50M races on back to back weekends,” says Rusiecki.
