Suunto Announces Inagural All-Around Freedive Competition

Suunto is sponsoring the freediving competition Vertical Blue 2010 and the first ever Suunto Dive-Off. This competition will divers in three disciplines and the winner will be crowned the best all-around freediver in the world.

Global designer and manufacturer of sports precision instruments, Suunto, announces its sponsorship of the freediving competition Vertical Blue 2010 and the first-ever Suunto Dive-Off. The Suunto Dive-Off competition will test divers across three disciplines of freediving – confirming the best all-around freediver in the world.

Held at Dean's Blue Hole in the Bahamas, the deepest blue hole in the world, Vertical Blue is the world's premier freediving invitational competition. The nine-day competition will take place between April 17 and 27, 2010. Freediving, an extremely physically demanding sport, involves diving dozens of meters below the water's surface without any breathing apparatus.

The first-ever Suunto Dive-Off will feature the three primary disciplines of freediving: Constant Weight, Unassisted and Free Immersion. Each athlete can earn up to 100 points, depending on the ration of their best performance compared to the best dive in the event. The freediver with the best possible score out of 300 points will be crowned the winner of the Suunto Dive-Off and the best all-around freediver of the year.

This year's Vertical Blue and Suunto Dive-off will bring together freediving newcomers, formidable national champions and both current and former world record holders including Herbert Nitsch, Martin Stepanek, William Trubridge, Guillaume Nery, Ryuzo Shinomiya, Dave Mullins, William Winram, Walter Steyn and Robert King.
