OSLO, Norway – After announcing a new distribution strategy in North America several weeks ago, Rottefella AS, the leading manufacturer of bindings for Nordic skiing, hired Salt Lake City-based industry veteran Scott Duer as Sales Manager for North America.

As Rottefella grows its business in North America, Duer will act as a face for the Norway-based brand in the U.S. and Canada, said Torbjørn Ragg, Marketing and Sales Manager for Rottefella. Rottefella makes the well-known NNN binding line for cross-country skiing, a wide range of telemark bindings, including the NTN system, as well as the Naxo alpine-touring binding.

Duer will act as a liaison with Rottefella headquarters on North American issues, work with key retailers, oversee marketing in North America, and support the brand at trade shows and on-snow demos. He will also work closely with Rottefella's U.S. distributors, Alpina Sports, Garmont North America, SCARPA North America, Erik Sports and Madshus, as well as with with Rossignol and Fischer, for whom Rottefella makes branded NNN products.

”Rottefella has sold its products for decades in North America through distributors, but we have really needed someone on the ground who can act as a liaison between us and our partners in North America, and Scott's perfect for that role,” Ragg said.

Duer has worked in the outdoor and ski industries for more than 20 years. Most recently, he was the men's softgoods merchandise divison manager for Park City-based e-tailer Backcountry.com. Before that, he was a sales representative and partner in the Rockies with Granite Marketing, which represented Alpina Sports, Sierra Designs, Gregory Packs and Horny Toad, among other brands. Duer also worked for many years as director of sales and marketing for Voile, and in late 80s and early 90s worked in outdoor specialty retail.

In early December, Rottefella, in a move designed to make it easier for retailers to purchase the NTN telemark binding/boot system, announced that it would distribute the NTN binding in North America through the three ski boot manufacturers/distributors who offer boots compatible with the NTN system, Alpina Sports, Garmont and SCARPA. It also announced that Alpina Sports would distribute its Naxo alpine-touring binding line moving forward. Alpina is already a distributor for Rottefella's NNN system bindings and its other 75 mm telemark bindings. Rottefella also distributes NNN products through Erik Sports and Madshus, NNN bindings (private label) and 75 mm telemark (e.g. Cobra) with Rossignol, and NNN bindings with Fischer (private label).

Introduced in Fall 2007, NTN (New Telemark Norm) is a new binding and boot interface that radically improves the power transfer from boot to ski for telemark skiing. Instead of attaching the boot to the ski via a ‘duckbill'-style 75 mm toe, as do all other telemark bindings, the NTN binding clasps the boot underfoot with opposing force. The interface connects to the boot via two separate points, at the front of the boot (much like a traditional alpine skiing binding) as well as under the boot just beneath the arch. Because it connects at two points, and in a more secure way, NTN delivers unparalleled performance and power transfer to the ski edges for telemark skiing.

The design also allows several other benefits for skiers, including side-to-side releaseability, step-in convenience, a free-pivot touring mode, and springs of different tensions to accommodate skiers of differing sizes and ability levels, as well as boots of different stiffnesses. This year, Rottefella has added a second size in the NTN binding to accommodate skiers with smaller boot sizes.
