Protect Our Winters (POW) is proud to announce our latest grant recipient: Salt Lake City-based non-profit Utah Clean Energy. Utah Clean Energy is a non-profit public interest organization partnering to build the new clean energy economy through policy, regulatory, and educational initiatives. Focusing on renewable energy, and energy efficiency, Utah Clean Energy advocates for policy change and regulatory reforms that support the widespread deployment of these technologies, and conducts education and outreach to advance clean energy across Utah and the West. Utah Clean Energy has a track record of engaging with diverse stakeholders on innovative and effective programs and projects, including the Solar Salt Lake Project, Utah Wind Power Campaign, and Utah Climate Campaign.

“We’re excited to be able to re-invest our contributions towards forward thinking, results-based programs like this,” said Chris Steinkamp, POWs Executive Director. One of America’s winter sports capitals, Utah is a battleground for shrinking winters and ski resorts threatened by global warming. As the leading independent source of clean energy policy, regulatory and consumer advocacy in Utah, Utah Clean Energy is a perfect ally in the fight to stop climate change and preserve the winter environment that POW members and all Utah residents enjoy.

POW’s $4,000 grant will go toward the Clean Energy Campaign, with 2012 benchmark goals for a 12% reduction in electricity and natural gas consumption (as compared to business-as-usual levels), and a 12% increase in the use of renewable energy. Meeting these goals will put the Utah on track to achieve state goals of 20% renewable energy by 2020, a level that Utah Clean Energy estimates will reduce the state’s carbon dioxide emissions by nearly 5 million metric tons, in the electricity sector alone.

“Clean energy development is not only good for our environment; it is good for our economy. It promotes new business, creates jobs, cuts down on energy bills, and helps maintain our natural landscape,” said Utah Clean Energy’s Executive Director, Sarah Wright.“We are thrilled to have a partner in POW who understands that by advancing renewable energy and energy efficiency, we are protecting our extraordinary winter sports industry for future generations to enjoy.”

In addition to granting Utah Clean Energy, POW is tapping its energetic and highly active membership base and snowsports industry partners to fund the aggressive Grant-A-Month initiative, a consistent commitment to fund programs that produce tangible, quantifiable results against climate change.
