(Boulder, Colo.) – La Sportiva N.A., makers of technical climbing, mountaineering, Mountain Running®, hiking footwear and ski mountaineering hardware has been honored as a recipient of a 2011 Backpacker magazine Editors' Choice Snow Award, a prestigious award in the outdoor industry, given annually to products in recognition of their outstanding innovation in design, materials and/or performance.

Backpacker Editor-In-Chief Jonathan Dorn and his staff of editors and testers presented La Sportiva with awards for both the GT ski and RT binding at the annual Outdoor Retailer Summer Market in Salt Lake City, Utah on Thursday, August 4, 2011.

“We're thrilled to receive two of the ten Editors' Choice Awards that were given out by Backpacker,” said Jonathan Lantz, President of La Sportiva North America. “Our new ski line is cutting edge and we're pleased that the team of editors at Backpacker Magazine agree.”

The GT ski and its sister, the women's specific GTS, are great one ski quivers for skiers that have a passion for ski mountaineering, touring and backcountry pursuits. Built with a slightly softer tip for soft snow performance, both models have a slightly longer radius that makes them ideal on steep terrain where side slipping and jump turns are required. The GTS has a flex pattern and adjusted sidecut that are engineered specifically for a woman's physiology.

The patented RT binding weighs in at 175 grams and is one of the world's lightest AT touring bindings. The RT binding features four patents including a toe release adjustment system (Release Value comparable to 5-10 DIN), a heel with two release adjustments (Frontal 5-10 RV, Lateral 5-10 RV), integrated crampon attachments and heel pins that track in a smooth releasing curved channel. Additionally, the RT binding offers a 3-position heel riser for touring mode.

All award winners must excel under extensive field-testing conducted by Backpacker's team of editors, who take hundreds of new products every year into the backcountry to put them to the test. This rigorous process ensures that the performance of the winners is truly worthy of distinction and meets the guiding principle behind the program: gear that is of real value to the readers of Backpacker magazine, who are very active, long-term outdoor enthusiasts.

“There's no other magazine or website that conducts in-depth field-testing as vigorously or impartially as the crew led by Gear Editor Kristin Hostetter,” said Backpacker Editor-in-Chief Jon Dorn. “With a core team that has several centuries of combined trail time and expertise in every backcountry discipline, they put products through an unprecedented level of real-world abuse in every terrain and weather imaginable, including snow and ice. Because of that, extending the coveted Editors' Choice Awards to the winter season allows us to lead consumers to even more products that show best-in-class performance.”

La Sportiva's full ski line is available now at select specialty retailers such as Backcountry.com and Mountaingear.com.
