NORTHFIELD, VT — Darn Tough Vermont, manufacturer of premium all-weather performance socks, will meet increasing consumer demand and prepare for expected growth in 2011 by making several major infrastructure investments throughout the year. The company's Northfield, Vermont hosiery mill will increase its number of knitting machines by nearly 50 percent, half of which will be the latest generation of seamless knitting machines. Furthermore, the company plans to add more staff and will install the most modern computer software for managing supply chain, inventory and manufacturing.

“The growth of Darn Tough Vermont is the result of an entrepreneurial vision; three-generations of hosiery expertise; a highly skilled, local workforce; a product that sets an industry precedent; and an unconditional lifetime guarantee to back it all up,” said Ric Cabot, founder and owner of Darn Tough Vermont. “Our infrastructure investments will ensure that we are able to meet the growing demand for our Vermont-made, performance socks.”

Cabot reports that Darn Tough Vermont's sales have been up 40 percent year-after-year since the company's founding in 2005. Founded on three main principles – comfort, fit and durability – the brand has earned a reputation among core athletes for knitting the industry's best performing and longest lasting socks. Darn Tough's high density knitting and stitch count is the result of rigorous testing by Cabot and his valued team of hosiery experts.

“As a third generation sock maker, I knew what was out on the market and I saw an opportunity to make something better,” said Cabot. “People have taken notice that there's a sock out there that lasts for years, and our fan base continues to grow.”

By adding more knitting machines to its Vermont mill, Darn Tough Vermont will be able to produce more of their premium, performance socks without sacrificing quality and attention to detail. Half of these new machines will be capable of producing the brand's new True-Seamless™ mesh and ultra-light socks. “Our True-Seamless™ ski, ride, run and bike socks represent one of the most innovative design features to come to the sock market in years. The consumer response to these technical socks has been tremendous,” said Cabot. “Our infrastructure upgrades will allow us to grow sustainably without compromising the principles our company was founded on, especially our made-in-Vermont label and attention to detail. Among other things, it's our local, skilled workforce that makes our socks so special.”

Over the course of the year, Darn Tough Vermont will add an additional eight to 10 employees to its team of approximately 100 at the Northfield, Vermont mill. This includes two managers to help oversee operations at the growing facility. “As the second largest employer in the town of Northfield, we take a lot of pride in providing quality, dependable jobs that people are proud to be a part of,” said Cabot.

“It's an exciting time for Darn Tough Vermont, our employees and our customers,” added Cabot. “Making an affordable, high-quality product in the USA defies the common adage that domestic manufacturing isn't a viable option for today's businesses.”
