  • With the Winter Olympics coming up, there’s lots of talk about athletes, competition and glory — but what are the things people aren’t talking about? This story tells us that Russia is awash in controversy over the games, leading some to question whether this will be a successful Olympic year.
  • Four snowboarders who claim the resort is engaging in discrimination because it doesn’t allow snowboarding are suing the Alta ski area in Utah, according to this story. The group was warned that they’d be turned away from chairlifts with their snowboards — after they bought their lift tickets — and when one snuck on with a split board he was intercepted and escorted off the mountain.
  • Alta is among the three U.S. ski resorts that prohibit snowboarding, but the pickle is that it’s located on public land, this story reports. So do the snowboarders suing the resort have a constitutional right to ski those slopes? The story has a section poll so you can vote for your opinion. Right now, most voters, 46 percent, are saying that snowboarders do not have a constitutional right to the slopes on the public land, 38 percent say snowboarders do have a right to shred there and 15 percent say that regardless of legalities, snowboarders should be allowed on the slopes.
  • Extremely sad news from the Las Vegas Ski and Snowboard resort — last week a 20-year-old died from blunt force chest trauma after he “took a hard fall” while attempting a jump, officials told the Las Vegas Review-Journal. This is the first blunt-force trauma death in the resort’s history, officials said in this story
  • This is what we’ve been looking for all our lives: office-appropriate yoga pants. Consumers want multifunctionality, and don’t want to look like a slob when they wear their yoga pants to work in order to hit a lunchtime yoga class. These new pants from Betabrand look like nice business casual pants you could pair with a button-down shirt and a cardigan and feel pretty.
  • One group in Iowa is looking to groom more spaces where folks can go cross country skiing. The Nordic Club is looking for sponsors to donate a total of $7,500 to pay crews to groom areas. Local outdoor retailers quoted in this story said they’ve seen a rise in the number of people wanting to cross country ski, especially cyclists looking to stay fit in the winter.
  • It turns out trail running isn’t the only mountain activity making its way into cities. If you thought you couldn’t get your cross-country ski or snowshoe on in the Windy City, you thought wrong. According to this story, both are popular activities along Chicago’s lakefront. And here we thought dad was the only person who busted out his snowshoes to get in a city workout during the snowy season.
  • If you’re heading out for a hike in some of Los Angeles’ beloved hiking spots, you might want to read this story about the high levels of air pollution plaguing those areas. According to the story, the National Park Service’s Air Resources Division has funding to study the pollution at local areas for three years and the first year research shows higher levels of oxides in places like Franklin Canyon.
  • Some of us are just solitary creatures who prefer when people are not around. For those types of folks, there is hiking alone. This story talks about the activity as a being dangerous but rewarding endeavor. The author gives his first-person recount of his quest to hike the Iroquois Peak solo and all the trials and memories that came with it.
  • Check out what Minneapolis is doing to keep kids off drugs. This story said local officials are getting youth hooked on fishing. It's a neat program to help get kids interested in something that could benefit our industry.
