Watching Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi burst into cheers over "Free Solo's" nomination for an Oscar on Tuesday mirrored the pure joy of seeing Alex Honnold top out on El Capitan in the film.
"I’ve been waiting my entire professional life for this moment," Vasarhelyi wrote on Instagram, about the nomination for Best Feature Documentary.
On his account, Chin wrote, "Thank you @alexhonnold for trusting us to tell your story. So proud of our entire team."
Widely considered to be one of the most epic climbing films, "Free Solo" documents Honnold's ropeless ascent of the 3,000-foot Freerider route on El Capitan in Yosemite National Park. Since its release in select theaters nationwide, the film has raked in more than $13 million in U.S. box office sales.
The nod comes after Chin's and Vasarhelyi's 2015 documentary "Meru"—following Chin, Conrad Anker, and Renan Ozturk's summit of the Himalayan peak—got passed up for a nomination.
Here's what Honnold had to say about this week's news:
The four other nominees are: “Hale County This Morning, This Evening”; “Minding the Gap”; “Of Fathers and Sons”; and “RBG." The award night airs on Feb. 24.
