The Sierra Club and The North Face have announced that Evan Geary is the winner of the wildly popular “Best Internship on Earth” challenge, designed to increase awareness and benefits around connecting young adults with the outdoors. The internship comes with a stipend, all-expenses paid travel and $2,000 worth of gear from The North Face.

Evan Geary will spend his summer with the "Best Internship on Earth" traveling the country and creating energetic video reports on the Sierra Club’s Inner City Outings, Building Bridges to the Outdoors, and Volunteer Vacations programs. He will hike, raft, climb and cavort with other participants in these programs, recording the experience in video blogs and promoting the importance of giving all young people opportunities to experience the outdoors.

“We had many talented, passionate people apply for this internship, and Evan impressed us with his humor, creativity and originality, said Sierra Club President Allison Chin. “We’re very excited to have him travel around the country this summer telling stories about adventures with our youth outdoors programs.”

“Today’s young hikers, campers and climbers are tomorrow’s outdoor enthusiasts and conservationists,” said Steve Rendle, president of The North Face and VF Corporation’s Outdoor Americas Coalition. “We are proud to support Sierra Club and Evan in this opportunity to have fun and explore the world in meaningful ways while educating others on how to get outdoors.”

"I am thrilled, grateful and proud to receive the Best Internship on Earth,” said Geary. “I can't wait to spend my summer hiking, rafting and more. John Muir was about my age when he began his travels, so it is an honor to follow in his footsteps through the club he founded.”

Geary is 23 years old, and studied film at NYU. He is originally from Webster, NY. His winning video can be viewed on the Best Internship on Earth web page as well as Sierra magazine online and The North Face’s PlanetExplore where America can follow his adventures across the country in the coming months.

More than 800 students and recent graduates from all parts of the country created video applications in hopes of hiking, rafting and climbing mountains nationwide as the Sierra Club’s Outdoor Youth Ambassador. The top 10 finalists for the program will receive a free pair of hiking boots from Hi-Tec to help them enjoy the outdoors this summer. To see the Top 10 finalist videos, visit
