The North Face Climber Cedar Wright Supports Big City Mountaineers
Cedar Wright turns first ascent attempt into Summit For Someone fundraiser to benefit Big City Mountaineers
10.13.2011– (Denver, Colo.) Big City Mountaineers (BCM), the non-profit that instills critical life skills in under-served urban youth through transformational wilderness mentoring expeditions, is excited to announce that The North Face climber Cedar Wright has created his own custom summitforsomeone.org climb.
Today, Cedar and Lucho Rivera will travel to Malaysia to attempt a first ascent on the little-climbed Dragon's Horns on Tioman Island, one of the largest granite walls in Southeast Asia, and raise $10,000 for BCM. Tioman Island, the biggest of 64 islands in a volcanic chain just off the coast of Malaysia, is filled with armies of voracious biting ants, giant red flying squirrels, massive monitor lizards, the Tioman walking catfish, and 25 species of snakes including king cobras.
Summit for Someone (SFS), BCM's largest fundraising initiative, allows individuals the opportunity to enjoy either a professionally guided climb on one of 13 epic peaks or the ability to create a custom adventure, all to provide inner-city youth with life-changing wilderness experiences alongside caring adult mentors.
"Our hope is that the climb will not only raise funds and awareness for Big City Mountaineers, but for the greater cause of connecting people to the outdoors," says Cedar. "Climbing, and a life spent outdoors, has transformed and improved my life immeasurably and I hope that our wild adventure in Malaysia can help raise awareness and create transformational opportunities for kids that desperately need them."
A longtime partner of BCM, The North Face has agreed to match all donations up to $4,000 in support of Cedar's climb. To learn more about Cedar's climb and SFS, or to donate in honor of Cedar, visit summitforsomeone.org.
