Want to make a difference in the life of a teen this summer? Big City Mountaineers (BCM), a nonprofit dedicated to enhancing the lives of under-resourced urban teens through transformative outdoor experiences, is now seeking volunteers for its summer 2010 weeklong backpacking and canoe trips.

BCM is seeking volunteers age 21 and older for backpacking trips based from the metro areas of Denver, San Francisco, Portland and Seattle, as well as Boundary Waters paddling trips based from Illinois, Minnesota and Wisconsin. Five adults, a trip leader and four volunteers with complimentary skill sets are matched with five teens from various youth agencies on each weeklong wilderness trip.

Background checks and skill assessments are performed on every volunteer applicant for the safety of the teens and volunteers. A $125 volunteer fee covers basic costs – food, transportation to trailhead and permits, although BCM provides fundraising opportunities to offset this cost.
