Launching in tandem with National Parks Week, the See America collection features three styles of Merrell’s Ontario 85 boot, each inspired by vintage National Park posters

ROCKFORD, Mich. (April 23, 2020) – Merrell and the Creative Action Network have partnered on a collection inspired by vintage posters of some of America’s least-visited National Parks and Monuments: Isle Royale National Park, Katahdin Woods & Waters National Monument, and Vermillion Cliffs National Monument.

Inspired by the diversity and beauty of these lesser known National Parks and Monuments, the design of the boots were influenced by Creative Action Network’s crowdsourced poster campaign,

See America, that is reviving the legacy of the New Deal arts projects by building a new collection of national park posters celebrating our shared natural landmarks and treasured sites.

Available now exclusively on Merrell.com for $140, the boots in the collection are Merrell’s Ontario 85 Mid Waterproof style and come in men’s and women’s. Inspired by Merrell hiking boots from 1985, this retro hiker features a performance Cordura® upper and sticky Vibram® Megagrip® for confidence on any adventure.

Each natural landmark has its own unique beauty and the artists who designed the posters featured in See America have their own connection to the treasured sites:

Isle Royale National Park

Standing defiantly in the waters of Lake Superior is Isle Royale, an outdoor destination that is uniquely challenging, isolated and worth every paddle. (Available only by seaplane, it’s also the least-visited National Park in the US!)

From the poster artist:

o This is an illustration of Isle Royale National Park, located in the beautiful Lake Superior, surrounded by images of native plants found in the area. Originally a screen-printed design, this piece illustrates the beautiful north-woods forests and scenic shores of Michigan's most remote northern wilderness. With its remarkable island ecosystem, fascinating geology, and amazing plants and wildlife, Isle Royale perfectly represents the wildness and beauty of northern Michigan's natural wonderlands.” – Artist Esther Licata

o Esther Licata is an illustrator and designer based in Detroit, Michigan.

Katahdin Woods & Waters National Monument

Deep in the dense forest of Baxter State Park stands Katahdin, the mountain home to some of Maine’s most diverse terrain, wildlife, and the end of the famed Appalachian Trail. Katahdin Woods is one of the country’s newest national monuments and was just established in 2016.

From the poster artist:

o “When I think of my design for Katahdin, and the other parks I’ve designed images for, I think of freedom. The freedom to escape the daily grind and to enjoy our beautiful National Parks. The beautiful freedom of nature.” – Artist Mark Forton

o Mark Forton resides in Michigan and his work has been seen in publications and galleries around the world.

Vermillion Cliffs National Monument

Deep in the Arizona desert, towering sandstone cliffs climb into star-filled skies to make what is known as one of the most remote and beautiful destinations in the American West.

From the poster artist:

o “As you travel deeper into the Vermilion Cliffs National Monument, the sense of history and the unfathomable scale of time display itself in such a way that you can only imagine what went on in between each layer of sediment. The surreal folding of sand and rocks bending on each other like waves tells a story of the constant change endured on earth, and yet this change can be represented even more beautifully with each new layer you come across.” – Artist Justin Beaulieu

o Justin Beaulieu is a graduate from Art Institute of California (Orange County), and is now a UX / UI designer located in Aliso Viejo, CA
