Magdalena Boulet Named Ultra Runner of the Year

GU Vice President of Research, Development and Innovation Magdalena Boulet, after a soaring year of success that rivaled her career-defining appearance at the Beijing Olympics, has been named the Ultra Runner of the Year.

The award, bestowed by UltraRunning Magazine, was based on her year-long domination of the beyond-marathon distance. Boulet entered eight ultra-distance races in 2015 and won six of them, including the Sean O’Brien 100k, the Chuckanut 50k and the UROC 100k. However, Boulet’s defining achievement was her win at the iconic Western States 100 Mile Endurance Run. With a winning time of 19:05:21, Boulet won North America’s oldest and most prestigious ultra in her first attempt at the 100-mile distance.

Karl Hoagland, the publisher and editor of UltraRunning Magazine, said, “When Magda shifted her focus to ultras in late 2013, nobody knew how high her ceiling in the sport could be. Her first crack at 100 miles on the biggest stage of all resulted in a dominating win, despite getting lost on the course. Her year was massive, but her bucket list remains huge. I think women’s ultrarunning is on the cusp of a golden era, led by Magda, who is full of grace and absolutely embodies the spirit of our sport. She is simply a shining light for our sport and community.”

Boulet’s demanding job developing and innovating products for GU Energy Labs may help, rather than hinder, her performance in a sport that demands such high levels of training and grueling performance. As she noted, “GU Energy Labs is very encouraging and supportive of me as an athlete. My running goals line up perfectly with our company’s core values.”

Boulet used her work in performance nutrition to inform her own fueling plan at Western States, using only GU Roctane Energy Drink Mix for the entirety of the event.GU Energy Labs co-founder and Chief Endurance Officer Brian Vaughan said, “We are enormously proud of Magda, obviously. Her results and accolades speak for themselves, but what is harder to quantify is her magnetic personality, her dedication, and the inspiration she gives to us and other athletes. For that, we’re doubly proud of her.”

UltraRunning named David Laney as the male Ultra Runner of the Year for 2015. Laney won the Chuckanut 50k and with his third-place finish at the UTMB, he became the first American man to finish that high on the podium of Europe’s most celebrated ultra.
