La Sportiva is working to expand the reach of competitive trail running throughout the country by partnering with the best trail races in each part of North America. These races will join together to form a competition to determine the fastest mountain runner on two legs. While the $25,000 purse for winning the La Sportiva Mountain Cup is almost unprecedented in the sport of Mountain Running, and is sure to draw the best athletes from around the continent, the 13 scenic venues were chosen to attract recreational trail runners and help grow the sport at a local level.
Each race in the series is designed to be fun, fast, exciting and very spectator-friendly. Some courses are hill climbs, some are true mountain races, and some are beautiful loops through the forest. Each venue was chosen because of its exceptional quality and fun factor. Because the courses are varied, no specialist is favored.
“The sport is ready for this,” said Buzz Burrell, La Sportiva Mountain Running Team captain. “The La Sportiva Mountain Cup will grow and improve the sport of trail running in North America. Participation in trail running is over a million, yet there is no marquee race, no competitive structure, no way to figure out who is the best - which is something just about all sports have.”
As part of their efforts, La Sportiva is partnering with retailers and race directors around the country to promote the races locally. Jay Curwen, co-owner, Black Dome Mountain Sports in Asheville, NC says that the events he has helped organize, which will now be a part of the LaSportiva Mountain Cup, are great venues attract elite athletes and recreational mountain runners alike.
“Single track trails, multiple river crossings, horrible climbs, fast descents … the Trace Ridge Run has it all!” Curwen said. “Black Diamond Mountain Sports is proud to be partnering with La Sportiva as they help grow grassroots trail racing in the United States.”
La Sportiva, turning 80 years young in 2008, was founded in a small village in the Italian Dolomites and the La Sportiva Mountain Cup reflects this heritage by bringing European-style trail/mountain racing to the U.S. and Canada.
The La Sportiva Mountain Cup is easy to enter. Once a race is completed, points will automatically be scored and totaled. Participants and spectators can follow the Cup throughout the racing season. Overall contenders will be scored on their best six races with $25,000 in cash prizes to be issued at the end of the series.
