Hyperlite MountainGear Launches Hellishly Strong Freakishly Light Gear

Hyperlite Mountain Gear (HMG), a designer, manufacturer and supplier of ultralight Cuben fiber outdoor equipment, announces their entry into the outdoor market.

Kennebunk, Maine (February 2011) – Hyperlite Mountain Gear (HMG), a designer, manufacturer and supplier of ultralight Cuben fiber outdoor equipment, announces their entry into the outdoor gear market. Originally used in high-performance sailing, Cuben fiber is a strong, 100% waterproof, non-woven laminate “fabric” that excels in demanding outdoor conditions, thereby enabling the production of high-quality outdoor gear with unmatched strength-to-weight performance. HMG's products are manufactured in the U.S. and include modular tent shelter systems, tarps, backpacks and stuff sacks, all designed with an optimal balance between durability and ultra lightweight. HMG products are currently available online at www.hyperlitemountaingear.com.

According to Chris Adams, VP of Operations at Cubic Tech Corp. (fabric supplier), their product CTF3 (aka Cuben Fiber) is made from the lightest, strongest fiber on earth. “I've been backpacking for years and hoped that manufacturers would begin incorporating our fabric into their designs as a way to save weight without sacrificing durability. An investment in Cuben Fiber gear pays off as most hikers, climbers, and backpackers experience immediate decreases in overall gear weight, allowing them to go faster and farther while simultaneously making them more comfortable.”

Pacific Crest Trail hiker and ultralight enthusiast Joe Johnson adds, “HMG offers the best gear for long-distance hikers. It is durable, light and highly adaptable. While some companies sacrifice product longevity, or focus on unnecessary extras, it seems that HMG was founded on quality, innovation and function, which is greatly appreciated by the long-distance community. I look forward to seeing what they come up with next.”

Ultralight Shelter Systems
Designed for the minimalist ultralight backpacker, climber, adventure racer, sea kayaker, or cyclist looking for protection from the elements, HMG's versatile modular shelter systems provide a three-season, highly ventilated alternative to single wall tents. Made with the highest quality materials and construction techniques, the shelter systems are available as complete packages or sold separately as components. The Echo l Solo Shelter System weighs 22.9 ounces and provides up to 24 square feet of fully enclosed protective coverage. The two-person Echo ll Shelter System weighs 29.4 ounces with up to 33 square feet of fully enclosed coverage. The Echo l & Echo ll ultralight shelter systems include three components; Echo Tarp, Echo Mesh Insert, and Echo Beak (weather vestibule).

o The Echo Tarp is made from CF8 weight Cuben fiber with a sealed cantenary cut ridgeline and fully bonded and reinforced tie outs. The Echo l provides up to 51 square feet of protection and weighs 8 ounces. Slightly larger, the Echo ll covers 68 square feet and weighs 9.3 ounces.

o The Echo Mesh Insert is a fully enclosed A-frame mesh tent with convenient elastic cords that connect into the Echo tarp. The insert can be installed after tarp set-up or left connected for quick system assembly. The mesh insert has a bathtub floor made from thicker CF15 Cuben fiber fabric and 8” CF8 sidewalls for extra durability and protection. No-see-um mesh upper walls and ceiling offer 100% insect protection and overall ventilation. The Echo l insert weighs 11 ounces, Echo ll insert weighs 15.4.

o The Echo Beak, or weather vestibule, is a protected entryway and add-on gear storage area made from CF 8 Cuben fiber and a full height water-resistant zipper. The Echo I and Echo II Beaks weigh 3.9 ounces and 4.7 ounces.

Windrider Ultralight Backpack
The Windrider is a 2,400 cubic inch ultralight pack made from a unique Cuben fiber/nylon hybrid. Available in four sizes, the Windrider fits torso lengths from 15-21”. This internal frame pack has two removable aluminum stays, three exterior mesh pockets, two waterproof hip pockets, an ice axe loop, compression straps, an internal hydration sleeve and port, and an adjustable sternum strap. The Windrider, with roll-top storm closure and double-reinforced bottom, is the only completely waterproof pack on the market.
