October 17, 2013, Berkeley, CA – At the start of the marathon leg of the 2013 Ironman World Championships, Mirinda “Rinny” Carfrae was just where she wanted to be: eight minutes behind the leader with seven athletes ahead of her. That deficit, though improbable to overcome, proved no worries, as Carfrae streaked to a 2:50:38 marathon time – a run course record and the third-fastest marathon (male or female) on the day.
Her six-and-a-half minute mile pace was the crucible upon which she shattered Chrissie Wellington’s World Championship record with a finishing time of 8:52:14, and she did it with the help of GU Energy, the official energy gel of Ironman.
Carfrae has been a GU sponsored athlete since early 2010, and the 32-year-old Australian not only beat Wellington’s time by nearly two minutes, she finished more than five minutes ahead of runner-up Rachel Joyce of Great Britain.
GU has been an integral part of my nutrition for years,” said Carfrae. “Without proper nutrition to fuel my performance, I wouldn’t be able to compete and win.”
It is Carfrae’s second Kona win in four years, and the thirtieth win of a storied career that began in 2002 and which also includes an Ironman 70.3 World Championship.
“Rinny has been not only one of triathlon’s most successful athletes,” said GU Energy president Tal Johnson. “But she’s also one of the great ambassadors of our sport. Her performance was stunning, and shows that everything matters in setting a new world record: training, recovery, equipment, nutrition – all of it has to work.”
