SNEWS is thrilled to share some good news about one of our own. Sharon Houghton, Group Manager for Active Interest Media’s Outdoor Group (which includes SNEWS, BACKPACKER, Climbing, Outdoor Guide, and National Parks Trips) has been honored with a 2018 Top Women in Media Award from Folio: magazine.

Folio: is the leading B2B publication for media and publishing professionals.

Houghton, 36, started at AIM in 2010 as a regional sales rep, and has risen through the ranks with her stellar energy, determination, and thought leadership both within AIM and the outdoor industry, according to Andy Clurman, president and CEO of AIM.

Mom to two young kids (ages 5 and 2), Houghton’s ability to juggle a demanding job with an active family life is a constant source of wonder to her colleagues. Within our company, she is known as a ferocious champion of her staff, a forward-thinking, compassionate leader, and a change-maker who’s not afraid of taking risks or speaking her mind.

As the key AIM liaison with Camber Outdoors (AIM is a Camber Peak Partner), Houghton also works closely with executive director, Deanne Buck, on inclusion in the outdoors. "Sharon is a strong leader who leads with integrity," says Buck. "She sees 2 to 3 steps ahead, and brings people with her. Camber Outdoors and the outdoor industry is fortunate to have her in our ranks."

She will accept her Industry Trailblazer Award at the Top Women in Media gathering in New York City on June 7, 2018. Fun fact: At the event, she’ll be rubbing elbows with Martha Stewart, who will be receiving the Folio: Lifetime Empowerment and Achievement Award.

Please join us in congratulating Sharon on this prestigious honor.

The outdoor industry is still an old boy's club

It's no secret that the outdoor industry has been said to be a bit of an old boy's club. So it wasn't a shock when Camber Outdoors conducted a workplace study in spring, and proved that the outdoor industry isn’t immune to gender inequalities. A total of 1,868 outdoor industry more
