  • This Standard-Examiner story touched our hearts here at SNEWS. Fitness trainer Sidney Reeves was jogging with his late girlfriend on a September night in 1987, just blocks from her home, when a drunken driver struck them. She was killed. His legs were crushed. Read this truly amazing story about an exceptional person.
  • We don’t know if you see your local firefighters shopping for groceries at the market, but we do. And they’re fit. Tasty visual snacks, if you will. So who wouldn’t want to be "Fit as a Firefighter?" This Nola Online article discusses the free summer "Fit as a Firefighter" summer camp in Slidell, La. Louisiana retailers, let your customers know about this May 5 event! Perhaps they’ll need some equipment to keep up their regime after the camp is over.
  • We’re pretty sure it’s not just Canadians who do this, but this recent post on Canada.com reported survey results showing more working Canadians find time for Facebook over fitness during office hours. The argument is, if you have time to fit Facebook into your day, you have time to get 150 minutes of physical exercise a week. Simply swap out your Facebook time for a brisk walk around the block.
  • Move over Rocky, Adrian’s taking the ring. This Reuters story reports more women are boxing to get into shape and take a break from their regular fitness routine. Boxing, the article states, is empowering for women. So retailers, stock up on your boxing accessories!
  • We at SNEWS love to be outside. We also cover the outdoor industry, so the outdoor gyms people are crazy about in South Africa caught our eye in this Mother Nature Network post. Retailers, you can stock up on ever-popular suspension-training devices that easily can be taken to the playground or the park for plein air sweat sessions.
  • This Everyday Health post discloses the secrets to successful weight loss, and here they are: Exercise more, eat less fat, join a weight-loss program and take some prescription drugs. We know you can’t offer all those services in your store (unless you’re also a pharmacist), but directing customers to places that can help (after they buy something from you, of course) could build loyalty.
  • Life changed forever when Bobby Hinds put 65 plastic beads on a nylon rope, thus creating the jump rope. Now Hinds, 80, is back and vowing to change fitness yet again with his rubber tubing weight products. Check out this CBS News story.
  • No longer do the ladies who lunch talk only about kids, fashion and travel. The topic de jour is fitness, according to this Huffington Post article. People, especially women, are swapping stories about the fitness classes they’re taking and why they’d recommend them.
  • This Men’s Fitness article outlines the results of the 2012 County Health Rankings, which showed several trends throughout the country, including how educational levels boost community health and that areas with more college-educated people have lower rates of premature death, smoking, physical inactivity and obesity.
  • You’re selling them the equipment and giving them the information, but in some cases, there is no such thing as too much knowledge. This Self blog post offers six tips about how your customers can get the most out of their cardio workout, including adding sprint intervals, using arms, lengthening the duration of the workout and incorporating strength training.

Have you read anything interesting you'd like to share with us? Maybe we'll include it next week's column with a little shout out to whoever sent it to us. Send a link to the story with the subject line "SNEWS Reads" to be considered.
