For Carolyn Crook, owner of Pack Rat Outdoor Center, reducing her store's carbon footprint has always been a concern. To curb it, she recently had solar panels installed to nearly cover their roof. "It's been phenomenal," she said.
According to Crook, along with helping the environment, the panels have slashed the store's electrical bills by hundreds each month.
One of Pack Rat's employees focuses on searching for ways to recycle and further reduce the shop's carbon footprint. For example, the store recycles all of its plastic bags with a nearby company that turns recycled plastic and wood shavings into long-lasting decking materials.
"I think in the current landscape, to be successful, you need to really focus on what you do, and do it well," Crook says of the importance of taking care of the local community. "Make sure that your customers are being taken care of. By us taking care of them, then they come back and take care of us."
