On Earth Day, the San Francisco-based nonprofit Climate Neutral released its first class of "climate neutral certified" companies, 71 businesses taking concrete actions to combat climate change.
To qualify for the certification, the businesses had to meet three requirements: verifiably measure their greenhouse gas footprint from making and delivering their products in 2019; purchase carbon credits to offset their entire footprint; and implement strategies to reduce future emissions. The certified companies now have the green light to display a Climate Neutral Certified label on "packaging, hang tags, websites, and other brand collateral." The certification lasts for a year before companies must reapply.
“Climate Neutral Certified companies show the world that immediate action on climate change is necessary and possible,” Austin Whitman, CEO of Climate Neutral, said in a statement announcing news. “Even under challenging business conditions, our first group of brands has stayed committed to solving the climate crisis by directing precious resources toward reducing and offsetting their emissions.
