The SNEWS® Mini-Survey that ended March 26, 2009 asked, “What are you doing differently to help your retail business survive the current economy?” It was refreshing to read that more than seven of 10 (71 percent) of our respondents indicated they were emphasizing more customer service and follow-up. Not surprisingly, more than two-thirds or 68 percent responded that they were “keeping their inventories leaner” while 53 percent indicated they were carrying fewer SKUs in their stores.

The year was 1998 and Timberland decided that in order not to confuse the consumer and to focus on its “tree” branding, the company needed to eliminate any brand except Timberland. That meant the company’s outdoor specialty-only footwear line, dubbed Mountain Athletics, was integrated into the broader Timberland offering. Mountain Athletics existed only in memory -- until this year.

Nike Inc (NYSE: NKE) said it plans to halt production at three shoe factories in China and one in Vietnam to reduce output and streamline its supply chain as a result of declining consumer demand.

Barrel Mountaineering of Bozeman, Mont., reopened on March 11 after a March 5 natural gas explosion ripped through downtown, destroying five historic buildings on the picturesque Main Street, and killing one woman, Tara Bowman, gallery director of one of the destroyed businesses, Montana Trails Gallery.

Sportsman's Warehouse to liquidate 23 stores after UFA nabs 15 stores to satisfy loan

The deal that UFA and Sportsman's Warehouse announced on Nov. 26, 2008, indicating that UFA was interested in acquiring a majority interest in the U.S. retailer, has collapsed like a deck of cards under the weight of due diligence findings, leaving Sportsman's Warehouse scrambling to remain a viable business.
