Jerry Stritzke has served as REI's CEO and president since October 2013 and is resigning in March 2019 amid an investigation into a personal relationship that could be perceived as a conflict of interest. The probe found no evidence of financial wrongdoing.

During Stritzke's tenure, REI launched the #OptOutside campaign to get more people outside on Black Friday as well as the Force of Nature campaign to get more women in outdoor leadership roles. Also under his leadership, REI boycotted brands owned by Vista Outdoors, which also owns an assault rifle manufacturer. Stritzke was often a spokesman for REI's stance on public lands, especially the shrinking of Bears Ears National Monument.
