Winter is Here: The North Face® Takes on Winter Running

The North Face® offers the ultimate in protection to keep runners dry and warm all winter

Cold weather has arrived, bringing with it snow, ice and frigid temperatures, and forcing many runners indoors. Committed to combating the cold with best-in-class protective apparel and gear more than 40 years, The North Face today unveiled its Fall 2013 collection of winter running apparel and footwear at Outdoor Retailer Winter Market in Salt Lake City, providing the ultimate in winter weather protection for runners from head to toe.

The North Face winter running collection features FlashDry™, GORE WINDSTOPPER® and TNF™ Apex technologies and innovative Thermo3D™ design to provide gender-specific temperature regulation to keep runners dry and warm for longer outdoor runs in cold weather conditions without overheating. Because the sun sets earlier and rises later in the winter more runners are hitting the road or trail in the dark, so all outerwear features reflectivity and is available in bright colors for better visibility.

“We have nearly 45 years of experience designing apparel to protect our athletes in the most extreme weather conditions, whether it is climbers on Everest or snowboarders in Antarctica,” said Kevin Joyce, The North Face performance product director. “We have an obligation to offer that same level of protection to our runners, and that is what we’ve accomplished with our winter running collection.”

For the new Fall ’13 collection, The North Face focused on developing a range of winter running apparel for a variety of climates and weather conditions to keep runners protected whether runners are facing snow, wind, ice, rain or cool dry climates. Highlights include:
•The Isotherm WS Jacket ($160 US MSRP) and Isotherm WS Tight ($140 US MSRP) featuring FlashDry™ and GORE WINDSTOPPER®, both new for Fall ’13 in men’s and women’s, are ideal for cold and windy temperatures.
•The new Regulate Jacket ($130 US MSRP) and Regulate Pant ($120 US MSRP) with TNF™ Apex soft shell offers breathable protection for frigid temperatures and even Nordic cross-training activities.
•New Impulse Active next-to-skin layers feature FlashDry™ technology for improved dry time and moisture management.
•The Feather Lite Storm Blocker Jacket ($200 US MSRP), also new for Fall ’13, is the lightest weight fully-waterproof, seam-sealed jacket The North Face has ever made at just 10.5 oz, and is intended for wet weather protection and has been tested by athletes on the trails at the Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc.

“Our winter running apparel is built to address that year-round training we know runners, and particularly ultrarunners are doing,” said Joyce. “Our athletes and our customers are runners who would absolutely rather brave cold weather than get their mileage in on a treadmill, and we think they deserve protective gear that will help them stay out longer, and keep warm and dry no matter when or where they're running.”

The North Face also debuted new winter running footwear for Fall ’13 with the Single-Track Hayasa II ($110 US MSRP) and the Ultra Guide GTX ($130 US MSRP). The Single-Track Hayasa II represents the first time that The North Face has used FlashDry™ technology in footwear to improve dry-time and moisture management, a feature that is crucial in wet and cold winter running. At just 9.1 oz, the Single-Track Hayasa II offers lightweight protection for hard pack surfaces and features Pebax® Foam Technology, which is lighter than traditional EVA and has a higher energy return without temperature sensitivity.

The Ultra Guide GTX, featuring a GORE-TEX® waterproof membrane, offers the lightweight (10.6 oz) efficiency of a minimal running shoe without sacrificing protection. The dual compression EVA CRADLE Guide midsole platform, TPU-welded mid-foot support and a TPU Snake Plate for forefoot protection from rocks make it ideal for rocky terrain.

“Moisture is a huge issue for runners, particularly in the winter, and there is nowhere you want to avoid moisture more than in your shoes,” said Paul Astorino, performance footwear director for The North Face. “With the addition of FlashDry to footwear we’re able to offer runners a variety of options to manage cold and wet road or trail conditions.”

FlashDry®, a technology innovation proprietary to The North Face, made its industry debut as a major focus for the company products moving forward. FlashDry™ utilizes a particle technology that has been used in garments for the Fall 2012 collection in everything from waterproof, breathable laminates to knits in jackets, baselayers, hats, gloves and now footwear, throughout the line. The porous particles of FlashDry® work with your body to regulate temperature by accelerating moisture removal and dramatically improving dry time.
