STRATHAM, NH – For the eighth consecutive year, Timberland has been recognized by CRO magazine as a “100 Best Corporate Citizen†for its corporate social responsibility efforts. In its January-February 2007 issue, CRO magazine reveals the results of the survey that ranks companies' performances based upon best practices in eight stakeholder categories: shareholders, community, governance, diversity, employees, environment, human rights, and product.
“We are constantly seeking ways to improve our processes and operate our business in the most responsible manner possible,†said Gordon Peterson, Vice President of Corporate Social Responsibility for Timberland. “We're inspired by the actions of other companies, such as those on this year's ‘Best Corporate Citizen' list, and honored to share this important recognition with them.â€
Timberland is ranked eighth on the 2007 list and joins Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, Advanced Micro Devices, Nike, Motorola, Intel, International Business Machines, Agilent Technologies, Starbucks Corporation, and General Mills to comprise this year's top ten companies.
Timberland received considerable recognition for its environmental stewardship efforts. In 2006, the company set a new standard for product transparency and increased its efforts to minimize environmental impact by introducing new, environmentally-friendlier packaging for its footwear products and a “nutritional label†– a product information label that details aspects of Timberland's environmental and community footprint. Last spring, the company also unveiled a solar panel installation at its distribution center in Ontario, California, which generates 60% of the power for the distribution facility and reduces the facility's greenhouse gas emissions by an estimated 480,000 pounds per year.
The 100 Best Corporate Citizens list was developed by Business Ethics magazine, which was incorporated last year into The CRO (www.thecro.com), a premier membership organization for Corporate Responsibility Officers. In addition to its flagship publication, CRO magazine, The CRO offers members a variety of multimedia content including annual conferences, webinars, e-newsletters and original online material.
“The 100 Best distinguish themselves from their peers at other large public companies by embracing higher standards—combining strong financial performance with responsible practices on environmental and social issues,†said Michael Connor, Publisher and Editor of CRO magazine. “We salute the 100 Best for their leadership roles in the field of corporate responsibility.â€
