Thailand, Malaysia and Japan Win Toddler Tour de France Titles

Hundreds of families cheered on children 6 years old and younger as they raced balance bikes “Fred Flintstone-style” in the Strider Cup World Championship, dubbed the “Toddler Tour de France” on July 21 in Boulder, Colorado. Thailand and Malaysia took home one title each and Japan won three world titles.

Nearly 320 racers from 26 states and 15 countries showed off their balance and coordination skills by navigating obstacles such as the Noodle Monster and Bubble Wrap Trap along the 650-foot course. The youngest rider, 19-month old Crew Blake of Littleton, Colorado, strode along the course in his diaper and enjoyed a cool beverage in his sippy cup after the race.

The event included a free ride and play area with demo bikes and helmets to teach children as young as 3 years old how to pedal a bike. Riders rang the “Pedal Graduation Gong” after learning to pedal on the Strider 14x Sport, the latest model that starts as a balance bike and includes a pedal kit when the child has mastered balancing.

“The Strider event was the highlight of our summer and we loved the race – especially the sense of community,” said Cameo Irons, mother of racers Evan (3) and Aimlee (5). Aimlee raced her 14x in balance mode and tried pedals on it for the first time in the demo area. “We were amazed! She pedaled on the first try – taking just three strides and off she went!”

The Strider Cup, held in venues across the country, is powered by the revolutionary design of Strider Bikes, which enables toddlers and young children to safely enjoy the mobility and independence of two-wheel biking at an earlier age than any prior generation.

All racers were treated to a celebratory podium award ceremony after their main race, where each received a medal, and the top ten finishers took home trophies – some taller than them. Leo Watanabe of Japan took home the 2-year-old title, Archirawit Chaimongkol from Thailand earned the top spot on the podium for 3-year-old racers, Yuhi Otake from Japan won the 4-year-old title, and his countryman Taiga Kuwahara was the 5-year-old winner. Imran Ismail Shariman from Malaysia came in first place in the 14x open class.

On Friday evening Strider presented Imagine Colorado with 10 Strider 14x Sport models designed for children 3 – 7 years old.

Event sponsors Amica, Clif Bar, Honey Stinger, Justin’s, Lasater Pei’s Bars, Quarq, Nitze Ize and Wild Child Bikes provided additional family activities.

The Strider Cup World Championship in Boulder was the season finale for an exciting race season. Strider hosted three previous Strider Cup races in Fort Worth, Texas, on May 5, Cleveland, Ohio, on May 26 and Charlotte, North Carolina, on June 16.
