Building on a strong 2008 season for Backpacker Magazine's Summit for Someone benefit climb series, the 2009 season introduces a few changes that will continue to strengthen the program. On October 15, 2008, registration for the 2009 climbs will open. With a new presenting sponsor, adjustments to the website, and a change in the gear structure, 2009 is already off to a strong start.

Online retailer Mountain Gear signed on as a presenting sponsor for Summit for Someone and will handle all the gear for the climbs. Participants will get a specified dollar amount voucher and be able to redeem it from a provided list the gear they need for their climb from Mountain Gear's website.

The 2009 climb series has room for over 250 participants, climbing on 17 different peaks in North America. In addition to the standard glacial and alpine climbs, two specialty climbs will continue from last year: Expedition and Women's Specific.

Expedition
Three expedition climbs continue into the 2009 season. The 5-10 day Expeditions will take place in Alaska and Mexico and are available to those with previous mountaineering experience. New this year is a ‘beginners' expedition on Mt. Sneffles in Colorado for those without previous mountaineering experience.

Women's Specific
Due to the popularity of the women's specific climbs in 2008, they will be continued in 2009. Two climbs up Mt. Hood and Mt. Shasta will be led by teams of professional women guides.

Each climb is led by well-renowned guide services such as Jackson Hole Mountain Guides, GoTrek Expeditions, Rainier Mountaineering International and Sierra Mountaineering International.

About Summit for Someone:
Backpacker Magazine's Summit For Someoneâ„¢ benefit climbs are Big City Mountaineers primary fundraising program, in which individuals fundraise to go on a guided mountaineering trip on many of North America's most sought after peaks. The funds raised from Backpacker Magazine's Summit For Someoneâ„¢ benefit climbs are enough to fully sponsor five teens and a youth agency leader for the summer outdoor youth mentoring program. www.summitforsomeone.org
