Sierra Designs’ Ryan Waters summits Nepal’s Manaslu

Sierra Designs athlete Ryan Waters and his Mountain Professionals team successfully summited Manaslu, the 8th highest mountain in the world, on Oct. 4, 2011.

BOULDER, COLORADO – Sierra Designs athlete Ryan Waters and his Mountain Professionals team successfully summited Manaslu, the 8th highest mountain in the world, on Oct. 4, 2011.

Located in west-central Nepal, Manaslu features a striking summit of 8,156 meters (26,759 ft) which towers over the surrounding landscape. Translated as the “mountain of the spirit,” Manaslu lures climbers with dramatic and lengthy ridges, spectacular glaciers, and intriguing approaches from all directions.

“Manaslu receives a lot of snow even for big peak standards, so there were a few avalanches in one of the difficult sections,” said Waters during a post-trip Q&A. “some climbers on another team were hurt, so it was pretty nerve wracking at times.”

Waters' team chose the Northeast ‘normal' route, and included Marius Holgersen, Cherring Sherpa, Cecilie Skog and Lakpa Dorjee Sherpa.

Based out of Sierra Designs tents and wearing Sierra Designs insulated and performance apparel, the team reached camp 1 comfortably, describing the route above as a “mini Khumbu Icefall” with broad sweeping traverses, seracs, and fixed ladders crossing over substantial crevasses.

The team was locked into the camp by extended snowfall that began on Sept. 25 and stretched to the Sept. 30. Fortunately, the comfort of their basecamp provided a superior setting to wait for a weather window. When the weather did finally clear, the team pushed forward to 7444 meters before making their summit push.

Waters and the team brought a Sierra Designs Grand Mothership 12 basecamp tent, as well as Mountain Meteor tents for high on the mountain. He also utilized a Ridge Runner 15 down sleeping bag, which kept him “toasty warm” up to 15,410 feet (4700m).

Waters summited while wearing a Sierra Designs Fiend down jacket and pants combination, a setup chosen for its flexibility. He also used a Gnar Vest and Splitter pullover – calling the latter a “perfect midlayer.”

Waters and the Mountain Professionals team will follow up their Manaslu summit with a June 2012 expedition to climb 8,035m Gasherbrum 2 in the Karakoram Himalaya Located in a remote region of Northern Pakistan, G2 is the world´s 13th highest mountain.
