Climb Smart is an annual event to support the Friends of Joshua Tree (FOJT)a climbing advocacy organization (LCO - Local Climbing Organization) to enhance climbing activities in Joshua Tree National Park. Joshua Tree National Park has long enjoyed a reputation as a world-class climbing mecca. For decades climbers from around the world have come to experience its steep cracks, exposed slabs, and huge granite domes. As rock climbing has become more popular, it also has become apparent that private, non-profit organizations were needed to work with varying issues such as ecosystem preservation, wildlife preservation, and and how these topics relate to climbers’ access.

Simply put, the park and its climbers needed an activist group, Hence, local climbers responded to the challenge, and in 1991 they formed Friends of Joshua Tree. This dedication that first formed Friends of Joshua Tree continues today. This coming weekend marks 15 years of Climb Smart support and MGOYA as a new supporter and participant.

Last year, at this time MGOYA youth had the honor of learning to climb with the likes of five time World Climbing Champion Lynn Hill and the legendary Stonemaster Linh Nguyen. (pictured here Lynn Hill and MGOYA participant)

This year, Sandy Martin-Alvarenga, School Administrator and Magnet Coordinator of San Pedro High School (Los Angeles Unified School District), has been instrumental in helping Janice and Johanna Belson, Co-Directors of Medicines Global, organize this trip to Climb Smart as well as various other wilderness adventures.

Medicines Global and San Pedro High School will be giving three large format digital photographs taken and printed by the pioneering digital photographer Eric Hanson of xRez Studios to the Superintendent and Staff of Joshua Tree National Park. The gigapixel photographs were taken earlier this year when Eric Hanson joined the Medicines Global Outdoor Youth Ambassdors in Joshua Tree to teach them about digital imaging and outdoor photography.

Medicines Global serves as the parent organization for the Medicines Global Outdoor Youth Ambassador program created in 2004, to get the urban youth into the outdoors. Through local and international outdoor fun and humanitarian adventure travel the Outdoor Ambassador programs offer hiking, climbing, camping, kayaking and surfing activities that develop environmental and nutritional awareness for much deserving urban youth.

Medicines Global is dedicated to inspire all adventure travelers to give back to the places they visit by delivering basic first aid supplies to medical centers and remote community run health posts. On Medicines Global’s first expedition to Nepal in 1999, 3000 units of pharmaceutical strength Vitamin A were delivered reversing early nutritional blindness in 1000s of children. Medicines Global networks within the outdoor retail world, food industry and medical relief agencies to create innovative ways of delivering critical first aid supplies through the hands of individual adventure travelers.
