LAS VEGAS (December 15, 2010)—Las Vegas Ski & Snowboard Resort (LVSSR) will host its inaugural “Powder and Sun Throw Down, Chow Down” ski and snowboard contest on Sunday, Jan. 16, 2011. The contest, which is open to male and female riders of all ages, challenges participants to perform tricks on a series of features, including rails and jibs, in the LVSSR’s Darkside Park. Competitors will have the chance to win thousands of dollars in prizes, and registered riders will receive a hot dog or hamburger lunch they can “chow down” the day of the event.

“These contests always draw a crowd and are tons of fun for both the competitors and spectators,” says Curt Sheffield, director of business affairs at LVSSR. “There is a lot of talent in Las Vegas, and contests like this one gives local riders a chance to showcase their skills. It challenges them through some friendly competition,” he says.

The entry fee is $25 plus the cost of a lift ticket; season pass holders will the pay entry fee. The contest starts at 11 a.m., with registration open the day of the event only from 9 a.m. until 10 a.m. Contestants will be divided by gender into two age categories: 15 and under and 16 and over, and will have a 45 minute jam session to throw down their best tricks, which will be judged on landing, difficulty and style. The top three riders in each category will be awarded special prizes. All registered competitors will be eligible to win prizes including snowboards, hats, shirts and gloves from Powder and Sun in a raffle.

“While LVSSR offers the ideal natural landscape for those learning to ski or board, our Darkside Park team, which maps out and then sculpts the features in the park, is committed to producing creative features to keep our boarders and skiers challenged,” says Sheffield. “That’s why the park has had such an incredible draw. Our team has done its homework this year and we know the community will be impressed.”
