Health+Fitness Business Expo Continues Growth Trend

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, Calif. – A continued upswing in market vitality was apparent during the 2011 Health+Fitness Business Expo (HFB), held September 14-16, in conjunction with the Interbike International Bicycle Expo at the Sands Expo and Convention Center.

During the three-day show, thousands of retailers crowded the aisles to see the latest retail fitness/wellness/health-focused products from more than 100 brands. While final attendance numbers are still being tabulated, anecdotal evidence suggests HFB retained the dramatic increase in industry participation and retail attendance gained in 2010. This information is further supported by the quarter of bicycle retailers attending Interbike who indicate they also shop fitness products to offer in their stores.

HFB was further integrated into the bicycle industry trade show with placement of exhibitor booths adjacent to the registration area and neighboring Interbike exhibitors and event zones. This front row placement highlighted for attendees the new products and technology exhibitors had to offer.

“This year’s placement of HFB is much more reflective of the alignment the fitness and cycling markets share,” said Pat Hus, Health+Fitness Business and Interbike managing director. “Integrating HFB exhibitors front and center with Interbike on the street-level floor, adding the triathlon-focused Tri Zone, a velodrome, product demo areas and new eatery options, along with dozens of industry magazine racks, helped make the fitness show easier to browse and the entire street level a true destination for retailers interested in fitness brands and products.”

Amenities specific to HFB included a dedicated fitness product demo area, daily yoga classes, the SNEWS Community Hub, as well as returning early morning workout opportunities in manufacturer booths.

While the retail fitness industry was pleased with the new placement and features, many were excited and focused on the improved health of the industry on display at the show and being able to do business with companies that had been away for a few years.

“After a two-year hiatus from the show, we're really pleased with our decision to return." said Alan Gore, owner of Body Craft. "The booth has been busy from the 'show opens' announcement all the way to the end of the day. We've picked up a lot of new business and certainly benefited from the high energy the industry is feeling."

“The show really seemed to maintain the growth and improved quality we saw last year, and as a retailer, I appreciate all the exhibitors who displayed,” said Mark Friesen of Fitness Advantage Inc.

Other manufacturers cited HFB as a business event where they could bring a unique product experience to their retail customers.

"Health+Fitness Business, because it's the one show we do each year, is important to our business and the place we can best connect with our dealer base," said Julie Creed, BH Fitness director of marketing. "Dealers really responded to the opportunity to run through the lines with sponsored professional triathlete, Angela Naeth, and hear how she's using the equipment to enhance her training. That’s a business opportunity and experience we wouldn’t be able to replicate to scale anywhere else."
