Coleman Names Mike Haugen As Exponent Ambassador

Veteran mountaineer and climber Mike Haugen has been named The Coleman Company, Inc.’s ambassador to the outdoor community for its performance-oriented Coleman® Exponent® line of outdoor products.

Veteran mountaineer and climber Mike Haugen has been named The Coleman Company, Inc.'s ambassador to the outdoor community for its performance-oriented Coleman® Exponent® line of outdoor products. Haugen will make sponsored appearances for the company at industry events, in stores and will host special events to broaden Coleman's exposure to the public. Haugen also will assist with new product development by field-testing products.

According to Coleman president and CEO, Gary A. Kiedaisch, Haugen is the right man for a challenging job. “The quality of the person representing Coleman must be synonymous with our products' performance. In that regard, Mike Haugen is a first-round draft pick. He's passionate about Coleman's mission with the outdoor community, and his dedication to living the outdoor life is what Coleman is all about.”

Mike Haugen has been rock climbing and mountaineering since his teenage years and has climbed in many parts of the world. He is an enthusiastic traveler, having explored and climbed in more than 30 countries. He is a Wilderness First Responder, holds Avalanche Level II certification and is a Leave No Trace trainer. Haugen is an avid skier, sailor and is experienced in nearly every other outdoor sport.

His impressive climbing resume includes 40 ascents of Mount Rainier, two expeditions of Mount McKinley, a trip to Vinson-Massif, Antarctica, two expeditions to Mexico's Pico de Orizaba volcano and a one-day climb of Mt. Olympus. In addition, he has made winter ascents of Mt. Washington, NH, as well as numerous climbs in the Rocky Mountains and the Cascades.

“Every company that designs products for the outdoors should have input from people who've spent time using them,” Haugen said. “It gives you a real appreciation for the features and the quality of the products when you have relied on them in all types of conditions. I grew up using Coleman products on camping trips; their 2-burner stove was the old standby. I look forward to working with Coleman to create the next generation of ‘the old standby.'”

On a personal level, Haugen's mission is to expose people to outdoor experiences they might not have the opportunity to appreciate in their normal lives. He spends summers guiding groups through a variety of outdoor experiences, both in rock climbing and mountaineering. He also has worked with young people at the Denver Public Schools Outdoor School, a 300-acre preserve near Boulder, Colo., where he has led many a fifth grade class on daylong adventures to learn outdoor skills and gain confidence.

Haugen is a full-time eighth grade science teacher in an inner city Denver school. He holds a master's degree in evolutionary physiology from Ohio State University and will begin his tenure as a Coleman ambassador at the Outdoor Retailer Show in Salt Lake City in late January 2006.
