Paonia, Colorado—January 12, 2006- Chaco is leaving a lighter eco-footprint by choosing to support wind power for 100% of the energy used in the Paonia, Colorado headquarter offices and local manufacturing facility. Chaco is committed to sustainability at all levels of its operations through this commitment to 400 megawatt hours (MWh) per year of regionally sourced clean, renewable wind energy.

Chaco will purchase Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) through 3 Phases Energy, a national provider of renewable energy solutions. Purchasing RECs supports existing wind projects, helps provide finance streams for new projects, and creates a base for future clean energy production.

Chaco's renewable energy will be sourced from Green-e Certified® wind farms in Kansas and Wyoming and will provide the equivalent environmental benefit of reducing carbon emissions by 572,600 lbs, planting 70 acres of trees, or taking 54 cars off the road annually.

Wind power is the fastest growing source of energy in the world, and its prices are becoming competitive with the cost of electricity from new coal-fired power plants. With additional investment from American businesses and organizations like Chaco, the cost of wind power could drop significantly within the next few years. In addition to the economic benefits, wind power is pollution-free, it is domestically produced and it is renewable.

“Choosing renewable energy aligns with our company's sustainability values,” said Dave Knutson, Chaco's Minister of Sustainability. “By ensuring that our energy is clean, renewable, and local, we are supporting our environment and the economy of our region. This upholds Chaco's standards of focusing on profit, people, and the planet.”

Chaco considers sustainable ways of thinking and designing at all levels of operation – from the sandals they make to the energy used for making them.
