(Golden, Colo.) – Big City Mountaineers (BCM), the leading non-profit that instills critical life skills in under-resourced urban youth through wilderness mentoring expeditions, is teaming up with Climbing magazine to raise over $60,000 from a Summit for Someone (SFS) fundraising climb.

Climbing magazine Editor Shannon Davis extended an invitation to readers to submit videos and testimonials for a chance to be selected to join the SFS climb in the Wind River Range. The fifteen readers chosen to participate will commit to raise at least $4,000 each for BCM youth.

SFS is a unique program that gives participants a chance to travel, climb the world’s premier mountains under the instruction of some of the world’s best guide services, and positively impact the lives of under-resourced urban youth. The vital funding raised through SFS enables BCM to help thousands of urban youth across the country in need of positive adult guidance, in challenging and restorative wilderness environments. BCM programs have a proven track record of improving integrity, self-esteem, decision-making abilities, and communication skills that keep kids healthy, active, in school, and motivated to strive for success.

"As a former staffer at Backpacker magazine I saw firsthand how this program not only directly benefited kids who need these life-enhancing experiences most, but also how this can be a transformative experience for readers as well," says Davis. "There are statistics showing how spending time in the backcountry and pushing yourself in pursuits like climbing lead people to form better friendships, to vote with the environment in mind, to do better in work and school, and more. It's for these reasons, that finding the right way to work with BCM was one of my top goals when I came on board as editor at Climbing. Climbers often joke about how selfish our sport and passion can seem, but this is living proof that you can do good by doing what you love—and introduce a young mind to the joys of the mountains."

Participants will receive a gear package from sponsors Mammut, Lowa Boots, Osprey Packs, Salewa, FITS socks, and Voormi. Jackson Hole Mountain Guides will provide world-class guides for the event.

"We’re excited to partner with the BCM and Climbing Magazine for the Wind River Climb," said Gribbin Loring, Marketing Manager for Mammut North America. "The climb is not only situated in a spectacular setting but to be given the opportunity to help support BCM is an added bonus. BCM is a fantastic partner with an incredibly noble mission of helping to expose youth to the outdoor lifestyle which is synonymous with Mammut’s core values. We look forward to one day seeing one of these youth leading a climb in the pristine wilderness of the Wind River range.”

In addition to this climb, the Summit for Someone climb opportunities include Mt. Whitney, Mt. Rainier, The Grand Teton, and Mt. Kilimanjaro along with 15 other world-class mountains. To help even more youth experience life-changing programs, please visit the Big City Mountaineers donation page.
