Black Diamond, Gregory acquired by Clarus Corp.

Black Diamond Equipment, which helped put the outdoor industry on the map in Utah, is becoming a publicly traded company through acquisition, and buying Sacramento-based Gregory Mountain Products. Black Diamond CEO Peter Metcalf says the deal will raise needed capital and create a lasting company that can compete on the global stage. Patagonia has informed SNEWS® that it has ended its co-branding and co-marketing relationship with SIGG as a direct result of the news first published by SNEWS on Aug. 19 that SIGG knew its bottles were lined with an epoxy coating that contained BPA prior to August 2008.

Laken disclosed BPA in liners to those who asked

In the Aug. 19, 2009, SNEWS® article, "Aluminum bottles you are selling may NOT be BPA-free," we stated, "At no time prior to this article did either SIGG or Laken admit or deny their linings contained BPA to the consumers…" Laken, which has been leading the push for transparency and BPA standards in bottles since early 2009, subsequently contacted SNEWS with proof that it did, in fact, disclose that its liners contained BPA to retailers who asked, beginning as early as April 2008.

Aluminum bottles you are selling may NOT be BPA-free

When concern over BPA in polycarbonate bottles reached a feverish pitch in late 2007 and early 2008, those selling aluminum bottles, including Sigg and Laken, benefited greatly as retailers and consumers scrambled for water-carrying alternatives. Sigg reported at one point it could hardly keep up with consumer demand. Consumers, retailers and most mainstream media assumed incorrectly aluminum bottles were BPA-free. In truth, until quite recently, the lining of all aluminum bottles contained BPA. Even today, it appears most aluminum bottles coming out of China still are coated with epoxy linings that contain BPA. * Want to read this article but aren't a SNEWS subscriber?
